Cyberpunk 2077 sequel may explore a brand-new city beyond Night City
The supposed sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, was announced in Fall 2022 and is set to be a highly ambitious continuation of the franchise. While details surrounding the sequel remain largely under wraps, recent comments suggest that the next installment in CD Projekt Red's dystopian RPG universe may leave behind the iconic Night City in favor of a brand-new setting.
Cyberpunk 2077 initially launched to mixed reception, but through consistent updates, the critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion, and the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, CD Projekt Red managed to turn the game’s fortunes around and regain the trust of its player base. Now, with anticipation building for its sequel, fans are eager to see where the studio will take the franchise next.
Night City Might Not Be the Center of the Next Chapter
During a panel at the 2025 Digital Dragons conference in Poland, Cyberpunk 2077 creator Mike Pondsmith dropped an intriguing hint. Speaking about the future of the series, he noted that players would be able to leave Night City and “visit another city” in the sequel. He didn’t elaborate further, stating that he couldn’t share more at this time.
Although the comment was brief, it has sparked widespread speculation. Some fans believe the next city could be Chicago, which has been referenced in in-game ads and lore scattered throughout Cyberpunk 2077. Others suggest an even more ambitious setting—possibly off-world—though no solid evidence supports that theory yet.
It remains unclear whether Project Orion will completely abandon Night City or simply expand to include multiple locations. Given Pondsmith’s wording, it’s possible that Night City may still play a role in the sequel’s story. Until more official details are shared, fans will have to rely on hints like Pondsmith’s to piece together what’s coming. In the meantime, Cyberpunk 2077 continues to thrive, with ongoing updates keeping Night City alive.
