Modern Warfare 4 Editions Compared: Standard vs Vault

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 offers three buying options, but to choose one of them is simpler than it might seem: Digital Standard, Digital Vault, and Physical Standard. The main difference is that the Vault Edition bundles the base game with additional operator cosmetics, weapon content, a season of BlackCell, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus. Physical buyers, meanwhile, are limited to the Standard Edition on consoles.

The Vault Edition is aimed at players who want the extra content across the game's seasonal ecosystem, while Standard is the straightforward option for anyone who simply wants to play. Before paying the premium, however, it's worth checking exactly what each edition includes and whether those extras justify the difference in price.

MW4 Editions at a Glance

The Xbox version supports Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing eligible purchases to be played across supported Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Modern Warfare 4 does not have versions for PS4 or Xbox One. There is also no physical Vault Edition: players who want a disc must choose Physical Standard.

The biggest distinction is therefore not the game itself, but the additional content bundled with the digital Vault Edition. Standard buyers get the core experience, while Vault buyers receive a collection of extras aimed at players who intend to make use of its operator, weapon, and seasonal content. See the release and preload times for launch-day details.

Standard Edition: Contents and Price

The Standard Edition is the entry point to Modern Warfare 4. It includes the base game without the additional operator packs, Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell season, or DMZ Deployment Bonus. These are bundled with Vault exclusively.

On consoles, the digital Standard Edition is offered as a Cross-Gen version, covering the supported console generations within the Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 family. Physical copies are also available for console players, although availability depends on the retailer and region. PC players can purchase the digital version through supported storefronts.

For anyone primarily interested in the campaign, multiplayer, and the core game modes, Standard is the most direct choice. It avoids paying extra for content that may have little value to players who do not care about cosmetic customization or seasonal premium rewards.

There were also limited-time pre-order benefits during the promotional window. These included the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, the Gilded Pearl Weapon Camo Pack, Campaign Early Access (October 16) and DMZ Early Access (October 20). These were pre-launch incentives, not ongoing bonuses that buyers should assume are still available after launch. The official edition breakdown and the official pre-order guide provide more details on the bonuses.

Prices vary by platform and region, so the best approach is to check the live listing for the platform you intend to use before purchasing.

Vault Edition: Contents and Price

The Digital Vault Edition includes the base game alongside five headline content components: two operator packs, a weapon collection, one season of BlackCell, and the DMZ Deployment Bonus. These are the main extras to weigh against the price difference.

• Hostile Alliance Operator Pack: Additional operator content for players who want more customization options.

• Special Forces Operator Pack: Another operator-focused bundle included with Vault.

• Signature Weapon Collection: Extra weapon content that distinguishes the premium package from Standard.

• BlackCell — one season: Premium seasonal content for the applicable season.

• DMZ Deployment Bonus: An additional benefit tied to the DMZ experience.

The Vault Edition is therefore more than a cosmetic upgrade, but its practical value depends on how much of the included content you will actually use. Players who regularly engage with seasonal progression and enjoy collecting operator and weapon cosmetics are more likely to get value from the bundle than those who primarily want the base game.

The 10% Loyalty Discount

Activision has also advertised an official 10% loyalty discount for eligible Vault Edition purchases, subject to the promotion's conditions. This can reduce the effective premium over Standard, but buyers should check the official offer and their platform's checkout price rather than assume the discount applies universally. Existing Standard Edition owners can also use the official Vault Edition Upgrade route where available. That provides a way to move to the premium package without buying the base game again as a separate full edition.

The key calculation is simple: compare the actual Vault price after any eligible loyalty discount with the Standard price, then decide whether the two operator packs, Signature Weapon Collection, one BlackCell season, and DMZ bonus are worth the remaining difference. The bundle's advertised contents are fixed, but their value is personal.

Which Edition Should You Buy?

Choose Standard if you only want Modern Warfare 4. It gives you the base game without requiring you to pay for premium extras. It is also the only choice if you specifically want a physical console copy.

Choose Vault if you will use the extras. The operator packs and Signature Weapon Collection are the most obvious draw for players who value customization, while the included BlackCell season and DMZ Deployment Bonus add more appeal for those who regularly engage with those parts of the game. The 10% loyalty discount can improve the deal for eligible buyers, but it does not automatically make Vault the better option for everyone.

Choose the Vault Upgrade if you already own Standard. This is the route to investigate if you have purchased the base game and later decide that the premium content is worth adding. Check the official store for the available upgrade and its current price.

Choose Physical Standard if you want a disc. There is no physical Vault Edition, so the premium bundle is a digital purchase.

Ultimately, Standard is the sensible default for players who want the game itself. Vault makes more sense for those who know they will use its bundled extras and can justify the additional cost after checking the price available to them.
