Cyberpunk 2 Development Begins: Fans Anticipate the Next Chapter

CD Projekt Red has officially announced that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, currently referred to as "Cyberpunk 2" (codename: Project Orion), has entered the pre-production phase as of May 2025. The development is being led by CD Projekt Red's North American teams based in Boston and Vancouver, with 96 developers actively working on the project as of April.

Although CDPR remains tight-lipped about the game's details, they have confirmed that Cyberpunk 2 is not yet the official name. Return to the familiar setting of Cyberpunk 2077, the sequel will revisit Night City and introduce a new location described by Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith as "Chicago gone wrong.". This suggests a darker, possibly more dystopian environment compared to the original setting. 

Cyberpunk 2 is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, aiming for high-quality, photorealistic graphics. At this moment, CD Projekt is currently in the production phase of The Witcher 4, a successor to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The company sold over 60 million copies of The Witcher 3 so far, which, together with expansions, generated 2.4 billion zlotys of revenue. Therefore, given the early stage of development and the studio's focus on other projects, such as The Witcher 4, industry analysts and CD Projekt Red have indicated that the release is likely years away, potentially around 2030.

Despite its rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has seen a resurgence in popularity. The Phantom Liberty expansion, released in September 2023, has sold over 10 million copies. Additionally, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which includes the base game and the expansion, is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. Cyberpunk 2 renewed interest in the franchise, setting a promising stage for the upcoming sequel. Fans can look forward to more details as development progresses, though patience will be key given the projected timeline.
