Cyberpunk 2077 Mod Takedown Highlights IP and Modder Tension
Cyberpunk 2077, the sci-fi open-world RPG from CD Projekt Red (CDPR), has once again been in the spotlight — this time not for a game update, but a dispute with the modding community. A popular fan-made virtual reality (VR) mod created by developer Luke Ross was recently removed after CDPR issued a DMCA takedown notice. The mod enabled players to experience Cyberpunk 2077 in VR, adding new immersion and replay value to an already active game years after its original release.
The Paid Mod That Crossed CDPR’s Red Line
The core reason, according to CDPR's VP Jan Rosner's Tweets on X, for the takedown was monetization. Although the mod itself didn’t contain official game assets, Ross offered access through his Patreon, effectively requiring payment. CDPR’s Fan Content Guidelines explicitly prohibit mods or derivative works from being sold or paywalled without permission. In enforcing these rules, CDPR also clarified that the mod could be returned if it were made freely available, with only optional donations accepted. Ross declined this option, asserting that his work deserved compensation and contesting the interpretation of the legal boundaries. As a result, the mod remains offline.
The reaction among players and creators has been mixed. Some support CDPR’s right to control how its intellectual property is used, noting that monetized mods can create legal and quality control problems if left unchecked. Others sympathize with modders who often invest hundreds of hours adding innovative features or fixing issues, and see the VR mod as an example of fan passion and ingenuity. The broader modding community is now debating sustainable ways for creators to be recognized and supported without infringing on developers’ rights.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in gaming between fan creativity and corporate ownership. It also underlines the importance of clear guidelines and communication between developers and modders. While Cyberpunk 2077 continues to thrive with new updates and community content, this high-profile takedown may influence how fan projects are handled across the industry.
