Turn-based RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 revealed, and it looks amazing
It’s that time of year again when exciting gaming events kick off, filled with numerous announcements and showcases of new titles from a plethora of major developers. For example, the recent State of Play event unveiled highly anticipated updates, including the latest trailers for Monster Hunter Wilds and Black Myth: Wukong. Not to be outdone, the recent Xbox Games Showcase also revealed new games, such as DOOM: The Dark Ages, and notably, a brand-new turn-based RPG titled Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Developed by Sandfall Interactive, an indie game studio founded in France specializing in single-player experiences, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a brand-new reactive turn-based RPG. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will transport players to a beautiful, surrealist world inspired by France’s La Belle Époque—a period renowned for its stunning and lavish contributions to the country's world-famous art and culture.
Each year, the Paintress awakens to paint a cursed number upon her monolith, causing those of that age to fade into oblivion. As this number ticks down, more lives are erased, and the shadows of death loom ever closer to those who remain. This cycle must end.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will utilize a unique reactive turn-based battle system. Sandfall Interactive, being huge fans of turn-based RPGs, action games, and Souls-likes, aimed to create something unique that combines the depth of a turn-based game with the thrill of executing a dodge or a perfect parry.
The game is set in the city of Lumière, the last city of humanity, where everyone knows the age at which they will die. Once a year, the Paintress awakens and paints a number on her Monolith. This number represents an age—the age of everyone who will soon be erased. Year by year, this number ticks down, more people die, and old age is not so old anymore.
You’ll play as Gustave and his fellow Expeditioners on their impossible quest to end the Paintress’s cycle of death. Your journey will take you through a vast and beautiful fantasy world, where you’ll battle deadly adversaries, befriend fabled creatures, and discover traces of the Expeditioners who came before you.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is coming in 2025 to Xbox via Game Pass on day one, PC, and PlayStation 5. More information about the game's world, characters, and gameplay is expected to be revealed soon. If you are a fan of turn-based RPG games, this is a must.
