DOOM: The Dark Ages is unveiled during Xbox Games Showcase
During the Xbox Showcase, id Software and Bethesda revealed DOOM: The Dark Ages as the next installment in the franchise. The trailer showed the game's first gameplay scenes and revealed when the title will hit the shelves. DOOM: The Dark Ages will arrive 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. According to the developer, the game will delve into the story of the Doomslayer before he became the great demon hunter, serving as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. In addition to sporting a renewed and more medieval look, it will feature its iconic weapons but with attention-grabbing details.
DOOM: The Dark Ages brings back the beloved Doomslayer, ready to annihilate hordes of enemies in hell. The game's fresh visuals and new setting, along with the introduction of revamped versions of traditional enemies, promise a thrilling experience. The Doomslayer's classic arsenal, now with some exciting additions, offers expanded possibilities for demon carnage, a feature that fans will surely appreciate.
One of the new weapons is a saw-shaped shield, which has multiple uses and utilities. It can withstand enemy fire, be thrown at adversaries, or be used for thrusts. A flail is also present to add more layers to melee combat. The end of the trailer also reveals two new gameplay elements. One of them is the giant robot Atlan, a massive and intimidating mech capable of defeating the colossi of hell with titanic metal fists. You also take control of the Slayer's Mechadragon, a creature equipped with thrusters and weapons for movement and combat.
The DOOM franchise was rebooted in 2016, delivering one of the best FPS games in recent years, recounting the story of the Doomslayer, a warrior who traversed the depths of hell, facing a demon invasion on Mars. Its sequel, DOOM Eternal, brought this invasion to Earth, further exploring the idea of the Doomslayer as a tool of the gods and how the player becomes the one who may be the only one capable of halting a millennial tyranny.
Another confirmed novelty during today's event is that the new DOOM will be multiplatform — meaning it will be released for both Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PC, and PlayStation 5. When Phil Spencer was asked about DOOM coming to PlayStation, he stated that DOOM, in particular, is a franchise that "everybody deserves to play," but seemed to suggest that future multiplatform releases may be on a case-by-case basis rather than a blanket approach. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is another Xbox first-party title that will continue to come to PlayStation, and possibly Nintendo Switch in the future.
DOOM: The Dark Ages arrives in 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC, but you can already keep an eye on our comparator. There, you can check the best deals on DOOM: The Dark Ages and delve into the origin story of the Doomslayer.
