Returnal wins slew of awards in BAFTAs

It’s a big year for Returnal now that it has won in four categories at the 2022 BAFTA Awards. Housemarque’s roguelike space shooter has taken home the award for Best Game, beating out such games as Deathloop, Forza Horizon 5, Inscryption, It Takes Two, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Apart from Best Game, Returnal also picked up awards for Best Music and Audio Achievement. Finally, actress Jane Perry won Best Performer in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Selene Vassos in Returnal. It’s notable that last year’s big winner, Hades, also won in multiple categories, including Game of the Year. 

Returnal won the most but is not the sole multi-award winner. Insomniac Games’ Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart won two awards, bagging the Best Animation and Technical Achievement categories. Meanwhile, Hazelight Studios’ It Takes Two garnered the Best Multiplayer Game and the Best Original Property awards. Beethoven & Dinosaur’s The Artful Escape also took home two awards for Artistic and Audio Achievement. Finally, Witchbeam’s Unpacking, a game about arranging stuff in your new home, won Best Narrative as well as EE Game of the Year.

Other notable winners include the deck builder Inscryption for Game Design, No Man’s Sky for Evolving Game, TOEM for Debut Game, Forza Horizon 5 for  British Game, and Before Your Eyes for Game Beyond Entertainment. You can find the full list of this year’s winners on the BAFTA website.

Returnal is a third-person shooter and psychological horror game that follows Selene Vassos, an astronaut caught in a time loop while on an extraterrestrial world called Atropos. With each death, she must start over, traveling across alien landscapes and fighting monsters until she can find the reason behind the temporal disturbance.
