The Ascension update is out for Returnal

Returnal has become quite an interesting option for PlayStation 5 players looking for a challenge. As an exclusive title for Sony's next-gen platform, Returnal does not have such a huge player base compared to recent hits like Elden Ring, but its unique features have made it one of the games to look at when looking for an exciting adventure. Developer Housemarque is on track to making it an even more appealing experience with the Ascension update that was revealed last month during the State of Play. The update adds quite a few novelties to Returnal, and it's already available for free to those that own the game.

Returnal: Ascension completely changes the game by including a cooperative mode that allows you to share this roguelike adventure with a friend. Of course, the number of tactical opportunities this brings to the players is huge, as you can now combine your efforts with your teammate to fight against all the alien threats that Atropos throws at you. 

The Ascension update also adds a new location to Returnal. The Tower of Sisyphus is a challenging gauntlet-type experience that you will have to face alone. You can access it after getting the Icarian Grapnel from the second Major boss in the game. The tower is composed of 20 procedurally generated floors that you will have to explore. Each of them is full of secrets, fearsome enemies, treasure rooms, and more. 

The Tower of Sisyphus is designed as a repeatable experience that you can tackle multiple times to get additional rewards. Completing each floor as fast as possible will allow you to reach the teleporter to an upper floor and get several bonuses. At the end of your run, you will get a score based on your performance.

With the Ascension update, Returnal gains a good deal of replayability without altering its main storyline and gameplay. That's definitely great for a game that already features roguelike elements. Detailed graphics, fast-paced combat, and a strange alien planet for you to explore have made Returnal the favorite game of many players on PlayStation 5 so far.
