FF7 Rebirth Director promises high-quality release on Switch 2
Square Enix has good news for Nintendo fans — Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will shine on the Switch 2. Series director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the team is working hard to ensure the second entry in the remake trilogy delivers a performance “just as high quality as the first game, if not higher.”
Following the announcement that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade launches for Switch 2 on January 22, 2026, players began speculating about how Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth would perform on the same hardware. According to Hamaguchi, when speaking to VGC, Square Enix’s prior experience optimizing for PC and Steam Deck gave the developers valuable insight into scaling performance for handheld platforms.
He explained that the studio developed a system similar to Unreal Engine’s Nanite, allowing the game to dynamically adjust visual quality depending on available processing power — such as lowering polygon count or resolution to maintain stability. This approach helped the team preserve high visual fidelity while ensuring smooth gameplay on less powerful systems.
“Our experiments with the Steam Deck were the key,” Hamaguchi told VGC. “People said, ‘Wow, it actually runs really well,’ and that experience gave us the know-how to bring Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to other portable platforms like the Switch 2.”
Optimized for Handheld Play
Square Enix aims to fine-tune Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for Switch 2’s hybrid design, promising stable frame rates and strong handheld performance. While Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade targets 30fps on the console, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth could benefit from improved optimization, offering smoother gameplay and greater visual consistency.
Hamaguchi also emphasized that the studio’s engineering-driven approach ensures each version of the trilogy — PS5, PC, or Switch 2 — runs at its best possible quality. “Nintendo players really don’t need to worry,” he said. “They’re going to get a version that’s just as satisfying and just as high quality as the first game.”
