Final Fantasy VII Rebirth producer addresses misunderstandings about the game financial performance
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launched in early 2024 to strong critical acclaim and immense fan appreciation. The game even secured a nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. However, despite winning over the hearts of players and critics alike, the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth appears to have influenced Square Enix's stance on future exclusivity for the franchise.
The producer of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth suggested that Square Enix may shift toward a multiplatform strategy for future Final Fantasy games. Despite the game's critical success, Square Enix revealed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth fell short of its sales expectations. This shortfall is a key factor behind the company's decision to reconsider its exclusivity strategy and prioritize releasing games on multiple platforms moving forward.
Square Enix will focus on multiplatform
In an interview with IGN Brazil, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase addressed the controversy surrounding the game, particularly the online discussions about its sales performance. Kitase stated that the sales figures for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are "safe and satisfying" for Square Enix.
“In terms of sales expectations, Sony held the PlayStation Partners Awards in Japan, and there was a category (Grand Award) in which they awarded the three best-selling games. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was one of them alongside Black Myth: Wukong and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. So, I think being recognized in this aspect gives me the certainty that we have reached a certain level,” Kitase told IGN Brazil, via machine translation.
Kitase added that "with the modernity of games," exclusivity to a single platform is no longer feasible. He emphasized that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth should be accessible to as many players as possible. This suggests we may soon see future Final Fantasy entries launching on PC from day one, especially considering the platform’s growing importance for game releases. A day-one Xbox version might also become a reality, as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi recently expressed his support for bringing the Final Fantasy VII Remake series to Xbox platforms.
Additionally, it has been announced that a PC version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will launch on January 23, 2025. Be sure to use our price comparison tool to find the best deal for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC!
