Final Fantasy VII gets new "improved" version on Steam
Square Enix has confirmed via its Steam page that a “new version” of the original Final Fantasy VII is coming to Steam, quietly replacing the long-standing 2013 PC release. While the announcement promises an “improved gameplay experience,” details remain surprisingly scarce, leaving longtime fans curious—and slightly confused—about what’s actually changing.
When the new version launches, the current release will be renamed FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition and removed from sale. Existing owners won’t be left behind, though: anyone who already owns the 2013 version will automatically receive the new edition at no additional cost, while still retaining access to the older one. There’s a catch, however—save data will not carry over between versions, meaning players will need to start fresh if they want to try the updated release.
At the moment, Square Enix has not shared a release date, pricing details, or a breakdown of improvements. There’s also no confirmation of technical upgrades, quality-of-life features, or how this new version might affect the game’s extensive modding scene, which has helped keep the PC release alive for more than a decade.

What Makes This Re-Release So Mysterious?
The wording of Square Enix’s announcement has only added to the uncertainty. While the company refers to a “new version,” it hasn’t clarified whether this means meaningful enhancements or simply a refreshed build aimed at long-term compatibility. Considering Final Fantasy VII first launched in 1997—and has already seen multiple PC iterations—fans were hoping for clearer answers.
The timing is also notable. Much of the spotlight around Final Fantasy VII today is focused on the remake trilogy, with Final Fantasy VII Remake already available on multiple platforms and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth expanding the modern retelling of Cloud’s journey. Against that backdrop, revisiting the original feels both nostalgic and oddly understated.
For now, fans will have to wait and see whether this new Steam version delivers meaningful improvements—or simply reshuffles a classic for a new era of players.
If you’re thinking about jumping into Midgar for the first time—or revisiting it in any form—this is a good moment to shop smart.
