Crimson Desert’s Massive Map and PS5 Features Detailed Ahead of Launch
New information about Crimson Desert has emerged ahead of its upcoming release, revealing more about the scale of its open world and how the ambitious action-adventure will run on PlayStation 5.
According to newly shared details, developer Pearl Abyss is aiming to deliver one of the largest explorable worlds in the genre. The map of Crimson Desert is reportedly significantly larger than the one featured in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and could even surpass the size of Red Dead Redemption 2. If those comparisons hold true, it would place the game among the largest open worlds ever created for a modern action RPG.
Built on Pearl Abyss' proprietary BlackSpace Engine, Crimson Desert follows the story of Kliff, leader of the Greymanes mercenaries, as he navigates a brutal world torn apart by war and political conflict. The game blends large-scale exploration with action-focused combat and cinematic storytelling.
The game is set in Pywel, a huge fantasy continent made up of diverse regions, cities, and wilderness areas. Players will travel across mountains, forests, and battle-scarred territories while encountering rival factions, monsters, and dynamic events scattered throughout the world. Exploration will also include optional activities such as hunting, fishing, and gathering resources, designed to make the environment feel active beyond the main story.
PS5 features
Pearl Abyss has also outlined how Crimson Desert will take advantage of PlayStation 5 hardware. The console's high-speed SSD is being used to stream large portions of the world seamlessly, reducing loading times as players move across the continent. On the technical side, the studio is implementing rendering optimizations such as Geometry Shader Oversubscription and NGG Culling, which help manage the massive environments while maintaining visual fidelity. These techniques are intended to keep performance stable even when the game displays large landscapes, dense vegetation, and numerous characters on screen.
Players on PS5 Pro can expect additional enhancements. Support for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) will allow the game to achieve higher resolutions and smoother performance, while ray tracing will enhance lighting and reflections throughout the world. The DualSense controller will also be used to reinforce immersion. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will respond to different gameplay actions, such as weapon clashes in combat or the tension of drawing a bow.
With its enormous world and outstanding graphics, Crimson Desert is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched releases of the year. The game is currently scheduled to launch March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
