Battlefield 6 jumps on the Battle Royale bandwagon with REDSEC
After the amazing success of Battlefield 6 at launch, Electronic Arts is making a bold move with the Battlefield series. The publisher has confirmed that the game will soon welcome a standalone, free-to-play battle royale mode called REDSEC, launching October 28, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The announcement was made through the official Battlefield account on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by the tagline: "Eyes up. Plates on."

A new Battlefield built for Battle Royale
REDSEC is a reimagining of Battlefield’s large-scale warfare within a battle royale framework. Built on the Battlefield 6 engine, REDSEC will be a completely separate download, available to all players regardless of whether they own the main game. EA says the mode is designed to "expand the Battlefield universe" by offering a faster, more competitive experience without losing the franchise’s identity.
Players can expect massive, open environments, vehicle-driven combat, and the signature destruction mechanics that have long defined the series. Unlike traditional battle royale titles, REDSEC aims to maintain Battlefield's focus on team-based strategy and combined-arms warfare, putting squads, tanks, and air support at the center of the chaos.
One of REDSEC's most talked-about mechanics is its brutal take on the shrinking zone, a the deadly ring that forces players closer together as a match progresses. According to early reports, anyone caught outside REDSEC's containment field will be instantly eliminated, rather than slowly drained of health.
This twist dramatically raises the stakes and eliminates a common tactic in other battle royales, where players briefly dip in and out of the zone to reposition. EA says the change is meant to make matches more decisive and fast-paced, rewarding quick thinking and precision under pressure.
EA’s big play for the free-to-play market
The decision to launch a standalone free-to-play title represents a significant pivot for EA. While Battlefield has traditionally remained a premium, paid experience, REDSEC is clearly targeting the player base that has fueled the success of competitors like Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends. By offering REDSEC at no cost, EA is positioning the Battlefield brand for long-term sustainability through live-service updates, seasonal content, and cosmetic monetization. The launch also coincides with Battlefield 6’s first seasonal update, an unusually fast rollout that highlights the publisher's intent to keep momentum high following the main game's release earlier this month.
What’s still under wraps
Despite the hype, EA has yet to confirm several key details about REDSEC. It's unclear whether the mode will feature cross-play, shared progression with Battlefield 6, or any form of battle pass integration. Information on player counts and map design has also been kept quiet, though insiders suggest a large-scale map inspired by Battlefield 6’s war-torn settings. More details are expected during a full gameplay reveal and developer livestream on launch day, where EA plans to showcase REDSEC’s first season of content and community roadmap.
The launch of REDSEC could be a defining moment for the Battlefield franchise. After years of mixed reception and competition from free-to-play rivals, EA is betting that a no-barrier entry point and a refined take on large-scale combat will reenergize its player base. If REDSEC delivers on its promise of fast-paced action, explosive environments, and the squad-focused intensity that made Battlefield famous, it could deliver a significant blow to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone, even before the latest installment in the series is released. In any case, whether REDSEC is the type of experience you are looking forward to jump into or not, Battlefield 6 is currently the king of the genre without any doubt, and you can get a Battlefield 6 game code at the best price with our comparator anytime.
