Palworld confirms its success ahead of the 1.0 launch
There was a time when Palworld seemed destined to be remembered as little more than a viral meme. The internet dubbed it "Pokémon with guns," social media dissected every creature that looked suspiciously familiar, and many expected the controversy to burn bright before fading just as quickly. Instead, Pocketpair's unlikely hit has done the exact opposite.
Just ahead of the game's long-awaited Version 1.0 launch on July 10, the developer has announced that Palworld has surpassed an astonishing 40 million players. Not bad for a game that spent much of its early life defending itself from accusations that it was little more than a monster-catching copycat.
More than a catchy nickname
There's no denying that Palworld owes part of its meteoric rise to its unforgettable elevator pitch. "Pokémon with guns" is the kind of description that practically markets itself, and curiosity alone brought millions of players through the front door. But curiosity only gets you so far.
Once players landed on its colorful islands, they found a game that had ambitions far beyond collecting adorable creatures. Survival mechanics, sprawling base construction, resource gathering, factory automation, multiplayer co-op, dungeon exploration, and a healthy dose of controlled chaos all combined into something that felt closer to a sandbox survival game than a traditional monster-collecting RPG.
Sure, you could capture creatures. You could also put them to work mining ore, generating electricity, crafting equipment, or defending your base from raids. It was bizarre, often hilarious, and surprisingly addictive.
Living under Pokémon's shadow
Of course, Palworld has never managed to escape comparisons with Nintendo's beloved franchise. From the moment gameplay footage appeared online, players began pointing out Pals that looked strikingly similar to certain Pokémon. The resemblance sparked endless debates across social media, with critics accusing Pocketpair of borrowing a little too heavily from one of gaming's biggest icons.
Those conversations eventually evolved into something more serious, with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company pursuing legal action focused on alleged patent infringements. For many smaller studios, that kind of legal cloud could have overshadowed everything else. Pocketpair, however, kept doing the one thing that mattered most: updating the game.
Early Access done right
While countless Early Access projects disappear into development limbo, Palworld steadily expanded. New islands appeared. More Pals joined the roster. Endgame activities became richer. Quality-of-life improvements arrived at a regular pace, and major updates consistently gave returning players fresh reasons to jump back in.
That steady cadence transformed what could have been a one-week viral sensation into one of the biggest success stories the survival genre has seen in years. The impressive player milestone reflects a community that kept growing as the game evolved alongside it.
A surprise success that found its own identity
Ironically, the nickname that first made Palworld famous may no longer describe why people continue to play it. Yes, the creature designs remain a talking point, and comparisons with Pokémon are unlikely to disappear anytime soon. But after more than two years of continuous development, the game has established an identity built around cooperative survival, automation, exploration, and the wonderfully chaotic interactions between players and their hardworking Pals. The similarities may have sparked the conversation, but the gameplay kept it alive.
As Palworld prepares to shed its Early Access label, Pocketpair finds itself in an enviable position. Version 1.0 already has an audience that may be eager to even start again. Forty million players later, the game has proven that first impressions aren't always the final verdict, and sometimes the biggest surprise in gaming isn't the controversy that surrounds a release, but how completely it manages to outgrow it.
