Sega has officially confirmed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will make its debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2025, giving fans a next-generation version of the high-speed racing title. The preorders for the digital edition are now available. This updated release promises to take full advantage of the Switch 2's hardware, delivering smoother performance, faster loading times, and sharper visuals.

The real competition with Mario Kart World begins

For players who already own Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on the original Nintendo Switch, Sega is offering an Upgrade Pack that allows users to transfer their progress to the new console. The upgrade will be available with a discount for a limited time after launch as a welcome gesture for long-time fans looking to continue their racing experience without starting over.

A physical edition of the Switch 2 version is also in development, with a planned release window in early 2026. Notably, Sega has confirmed that this version will ship on a full 64 GB cartridge, containing the entire game rather than a download-only key card. This move has been widely praised by players who still prefer owning physical media in an increasingly digital market.

In terms of new content, the Switch 2 edition comes with several enhancements. The game now runs at higher resolutions, features more detailed environments, and includes improved frame rates for a more fluid racing experience. Additionally, to celebrate the launch, Sega will offer a free "Werehog Pack" DLC, which is available to all players who purchase or upgrade before December 17, 2025.

Sega has also surprised fans with a fun crossover. Following the addition of Joker from Persona 5 to the game, Ichiban Kasuga, the beloved protagonist from Like a Dragon, will appear as a special playable character through free downloadable content. This unexpected collaboration brings a new level of humor and charm to the Sonic universe with a new playable character, the Dragon Brave vehicle, two new Like a Dragon songs in the Jukebox, and special emotes.

The release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on Nintendo Switch 2 represents more than just another port.
