Elden Ring’s the Wretch is truly deplorable

Elden Ring is coming in just a few days, and so it’s time to round off the last of the starting classes. This time, we formally meet the Prophet, who was introduced before. We also finally meet the worst possible class in the whole game, the class that director Hidetaka Miyazaki refers to as “the naked one,” the most painful way to play Elden Ring—the Wretch.

A deprived class

The Prophet is described here as a magic-user who was punished for speaking the truth, a case of shooting the messenger for the message. In a clear update of their design, the Prophet no longer wears a wheel around their neck but a piece of wood that seems to have once been part of a pillory. Unlike the Astrologer, who relies on Intelligence to cast spells, the Prophet’s magic is based on the Faith attribute. This allows him to cast impressive healing and holy magic. 

The Wretch’s description minces no words by calling them "a poor, purposeless sod, naked as the day they were born." They have the worst starting stats of all the classes and starts with only a club as their sole weapon. Whereas the Prisoner is weird, the Wretch is just sad; imagine being so poor as to not have hair. 

That said, every introduced class can one day become a powerhouse as you level up and gain items. While the Wretch is the least ideal of the classes, they exist to give players a real challenge by starting them off with disadvantages.
