Valor Mortis: A Brutal Soulslike Journey Through Napoleonic Horror
Developed by One More Level, the studio behind the acclaimed Ghostrunner series, and published by Lyrical Games, Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike set in a terrifying alternate version of Napoleonic Europe. Launched on October 13, the game is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with day-one access through Xbox Game Pass, according to the official launch announcement.
Valor Mortis comes in two editions: the Standard Edition at $39.99 and the Deluxe Edition at $59.99. The latter includes weapon skin packs and a story expansion planned for 2027.
A Fallen Soldier Returns to a World Consumed by Horror
Blending historical warfare with supernatural horror, Valor Mortis transforms the Napoleonic Wars into a nightmarish struggle against grotesque monsters, mysterious corruption, and deadly supernatural forces. Moving away from the familiar medieval fantasy setting, the game delivers a darker vision of 19th-century Europe, where brutal melee combat, terrifying enemies, and a plague-ravaged world create a distinctive Soulslike experience.
Players assume the role of William Dowsett, a soldier of Napoleon Bonaparte's Grande Armée who mysteriously returns from death. Upon awakening, William discovers that a horrifying plague has devastated Europe, transforming former comrades and ordinary citizens into monstrous creatures.
As he searches for answers about his resurrection, he uncovers sinister secrets surrounding the mysterious corruption and Napoleon's forces. The game's unsettling environments and alternate-history narrative create an atmosphere where military history meets supernatural terror.
First-Person Soulslike Combat With a Deadly Twist
Unlike conventional Soulslikes such as Elden Ring and Lies of P, Valor Mortis introduces a first-person combat system emphasizing precise parrying, dodging, and carefully timed counterattacks. Players wield swords, firearms, and supernatural abilities while confronting increasingly dangerous enemies. Exploration also matters, with hidden routes, shortcuts, and character upgrades encouraging players to explore the plague-ravaged world.
Although Valor Mortis did not offer pre-orders, players can now jump directly into its brutal Napoleonic nightmare, with a New Game+ mode planned for Q4 2026. For those looking to experience this unique first-person Soulslike, check out our comparison website for the best deal on Valor Mortis.
