Leaving aside its struggles at launch, Diablo IV is finally shaping into a worthy successor of the other installments in the popular ARPG series from Blizzard. The developers seem to be finally finding the appropriate path with post-launch updates and additional content, and the upcoming release of the Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred expansion will be the culmination of that process. Like Reaper of Souls did with Diablo III, the expansion will introduce a plethora of novelties to the game, including a new class, the Spiritborn. Of course, the expansion will feature other impactful elements that will define the future of the game. One of those is Mercenaries.

Get a companion

The possibility of enlisting the help of companions for your adventure in Sanctuary opens up plenty of new interactions in Diablo IV. Not only these companions will draw the attention of the demonic hordes that you encounter in the game, but they also will help you decimate them. Not only do they have a variety of utility abilities but also deal significant damage to your enemies. The most notable thing about the Mercenaries system in Diablo IV: Vessed of Hatred is that you will be able to customise them so they use their skills under specific circumstances. This offers you new ways of escaping death or setting up powerful combos to destroy your opponents.

Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred will feature four different mercenaries at launch: Raheir the Shieldbearer, Varyana the Berserk Crone, Aldkin the Cursed Child, and Subo the Drunken Archer. Each of them has access to unique skills that you can unlock and customize as you progress through the game. Also, Mercenaries will arrive with new events and special items for you to use alongside them.

Diablo IV's mercenary system is, in my opinion, an excellent idea that really enriches the gaming experience. I like the fact that these companions provide useful support in combat, while remaining customizable, allowing you to adapt your play style. Even in cooperation with a friend, this system remains relevant and well integrated. Mercenaries effectively complete the group without taking the place of players, reinforcing certain synergies or facilitating more demanding confrontations. They offer an additional sense of progression and make the endgame more flexible. It's an addition that I find successful and enjoyable, both in solo and co-op play.

I really like the mercenary system we introduced with Vessel of Hatred, as it enriches solo play without making it mandatory. For me, they are both useful and fun, especially for those who play solo and want a companion that makes sense in the story and the fight. Overall, I think the mercenaries are very well integrated into Vessel of Hatred. Their usefulness isn't just limited to hitting enemies: they know how to distract, absorb and sometimes even trigger interesting events in combat. I often play alone, and feeling this presence by my side makes the most dangerous areas more manageable without making the game easy. There's a real sense of role-sharing. I would have liked some more in-depth interactions with them like a bit of lore or dialog in the middle of a fight, but this system remains for me one of the extension's best ideas.

I really like the variety of mercenaries available: a tank, a berserker, an archer, a mage--choosing the one that best suits my play style makes each run unique. Raheir, for example, has saved me more than once by drawing all the mobs to him while I focus on damage. This customization of skills according to circumstances is a real advantage: I can define specific reactions to situations that pose me problems. In the end, mercenaries do not steal the show from my character, but they enrich each encounter and give a very rewarding feeling of progress. It is a good addition by Blizzard , I hope to see some of them again in a future update

What I love about Mercenaries is the feeling of playing Diablo II again but modernized. I choose my partner based on my needs and it completely changes the pace of combat. The report system that allows them to gain levels and increase their skills makes me want to try different compilations. They become almost secondary characters that I become with as the campaign progresses. It's a great step by Blizzard to revamp the solo experience without altering the DNA of the game.
