Death Stranding now fully owned by Kojima Productions, no longer Sony exclusive

For years, Death Stranding remained a PlayStation exclusive, but over time, it has expanded to platforms like PC, PS5, and even iPhones. Yet, an Xbox release is rather unprecedented, considering how heavily Sony was involved in the game’s development.

Recently, Kojima Productions announced that Death Stranding Director’s Cut will finally be coming to Xbox, fulfilling the long-awaited wish of many Xbox users. This follows a trend of new exclusives arriving on Xbox, and it signals Kojima Productions’ intent to broaden its reach. By bringing Death Stranding to Xbox, the studio is aiming to engage a larger audience beyond the PlayStation and PC communities, offering Xbox players a chance to experience the distinct world Kojima has crafted.

Kojima Productions now takes over ownership of Death Stranding IP

According to Insider Gaming, Kojima Productions has also confirmed that it now fully owns the rights to Death Stranding. This means that future games in the series are no longer limited to PlayStation, allowing for potential releases across more platforms.

The announcement came via Automaton Media, reading:

"In addition, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS announced that the IP for this work will belong to the studio. They said that they will continue to connect more fans around the world in various forms of entertainment."

This is great news for Xbox, as Death Stranding is now free from Sony’s grip. With Kojima Productions now holding the rights to the game, future releases could be ported to any platform they choose. Although the sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, is initially set for a PS5-exclusive release next year, it could reach PC and Xbox shortly after.

Additional details are expected from Kojima Productions, possibly at the upcoming Game Awards in December.
