January Showcase Highlights Resident Evil Requiem Gameplay and Story
Capcom revealed a substantial new wave of information about Resident Evil Requiem during its Resident Evil Showcase held yesterday, offering a clearer picture of how the next mainline entry in the long-running horror series will play and what players can expect when it launches on February 27, 2026. Coming alongside a major anniversary for the franchise, Resident Evil Requiem aims to merge classic survival horror with modern action design through dual protagonists, expanded difficulty options, and deeper enemy behavior.
Many exciting novelties revealed
The presentation focused on the game's two playable characters: FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and veteran hero Leon S. Kennedy. Each character is designed around a distinct gameplay philosophy. Grace's sections emphasize vulnerability, limited resources, and careful exploration, evoking the tension of earlier Resident Evil titles. Leon’s chapters, by contrast, lean heavily into action, featuring faster combat, more aggressive enemies, and a broader range of tools inspired by the mechanics introduced in Resident Evil 4.
Capcom also confirmed that players will be able to switch freely between first-person and third-person perspectives throughout the game. This option is intended to let players tailor the experience to their preferred style, whether they favor immersive horror or greater situational awareness during combat-heavy encounters.
Combat and enemy design were another major highlight. Infected enemies in Resident Evil Requiem exhibit more complex and sometimes unsettling behaviors, with some retaining habits from their former lives. These routines can be observed and exploited, allowing players to avoid confrontations or approach encounters more strategically. A new crafting system further expands player choice, as characters can collect materials, including blood from infected enemies, to create items that support survival, adding a calculated risk-reward element to combat.
The showcase also detailed the game’s difficulty structure, which is designed to appeal to both newcomers and long-time fans. Casual mode provides a more forgiving experience with assist features and reduced pressure, while Standard mode offers a balanced challenge. A separate "Standard Classic" option introduces old-school mechanics such as limited saves using ink ribbons and typewriters, specifically catering to players who miss the tension and resource management of earlier entries.
On the narrative side, Capcom teased a mysterious concept known as "Elpis," which plays a key role in connecting the stories of Grace, her late mother Alyssa, and Leon. While specifics remain unknown, the developers suggested that uncovering the meaning of Elpis will be central to understanding the game's overarching plot and how its dual perspectives intersect.
Beyond the game itself, Capcom revealed several promotional and cross-media collaborations tied to Resident Evil Requiem. These include high-end merchandise such as character-themed luxury watches, collectible figures, and a custom sports car created in partnership with Porsche. The company also announced a global orchestral concert tour celebrating the music of the Resident Evil series as part of its anniversary celebrations.
Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with additional support for cloud streaming and modern PC technologies such as ray tracing and advanced upscaling. With its blend of classic horror elements, modern action mechanics, and extensive customization options, the latest showcase confirmed that the game isone of the most ambitious entries in the franchise's history.
