Resident Evil 4 introduces new gameplay mechanics that significantly impact your choices in combat. Leon is able to crouch and take cover, which he couldn't in the original game. These options allow for slightly different approaches to many encounters, especially those where the enemies use ranged weapons. Stealth will also take a more prominent role in this version, which conversely allows for better management of the ammunition.

The game features "over-the-shoulder" third-person shooter gameplay similar to the original, while introducing several novelties such as quick time events and an inventory system that allows players to store items in a briefcase. Resident Evil 4 also includes several additional features such as breakable weapons which can be used strategically during combat, new puzzles that require creative solutions and an expanded arsenal of weapons for players to choose from.
