Treyarch has unveiled new details about the highly anticipated Zombies mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, giving fans their first look at a dramatic continuation of the Dark Aether storyline. The new chapter introduces a larger roster of playable characters, blending familiar faces with fresh incarnations from alternate timelines, while also teasing a dangerous new adversary.
The story picks up directly after the events of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Following the climactic collapse of Janus Towers, the four Requiem operatives (Grigori Weaver, Elizabeth Grey, Major Mackenzie “Mac” Carver, and Maya Aguinaldo) are pulled into the Dark Aether dimension. There, they encounter unexpected allies: alternate versions of the original Zombies crew, including Edward Richtofen, Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, and Takeo Masaki. Together, these eight characters form the core team at the heart of Black Ops 7’s undead struggle.
Each fighter brings a unique backstory tied to their respective timeline. Weaver steps into his role as a hardened leader haunted by the sacrifices he’s made, while Dr. Grey struggles to reconcile her scientific reasoning with the twisted horrors of the Dark Aether. Carver, once defined by his military career, now fights on his own terms, and Aguinaldo’s sharp instincts and streetwise perspective make her an invaluable survivor.
The alternate versions of the classic crew add an intriguing twist. Dempsey appears as a Vietnam-era soldier scarred by combat and disillusionment. Takeo arrives as a wandering ronin from feudal Japan, seeking redemption for past dishonor. Nikolai is reimagined as a Soviet commander from the 1980s, bitter yet still battle-ready, while Richtofen maintains his trademark eccentricity, masking darker intentions beneath a charismatic façade.
A new villain also enters the spotlight in the cinematic trailer Ashes of the Damned. This mysterious figure, cloaked in Western garb and carrying caged zombie skulls, demonstrates the ability to drain the very essence of the protagonists, leaving them altered and vulnerable. The threat sets the stage for a desperate mission: reclaim what has been stolen and find a way to escape the Dark Aether’s grasp.
The launch map, also titled Ashes of the Damned, promises to be one of the largest round-based Zombies arenas yet. Set within a warped reflection of Janus Towers, it will feature layered zones to explore, weaving together horror and lore in ways that long-time fans will immediately recognize.
For the Zombies community, this expansion feels like a convergence of everything the mode has built toward over the years. By merging beloved archetypes with alternate-timeline variations, Treyarch is doubling down on the series' central theme of fractured realities. At the same time, the addition of a powerful new antagonist signals a shift in tone, raising the stakes beyond simple survival.
