Secrets of the Archmages adds more magic to Age of Wonders 4
Age of Wonders 4 is already one of those games where you start a campaign “just to test a build” and suddenly lose half your day. Secrets of the Archmages makes that problem even worse, in the best way possible. The new DLC goes deep into ancient magic, forgotten wizard secrets, and strange realms, giving players more tools to create ridiculous fantasy empires and more reasons to start another campaign.
The main hook of Secrets of the Archmages is its focus on the old Wizard Kings of Athla and the hidden knowledge they found while exploring the Astral Sea. This is not just a small pack with a few extras thrown in. The DLC brings three new Story Realms: Evermore, Azh’Ruun Pit, and Burrow Downs. Each one has its own flavor, from mythic wizard adventure to infernal chaos and fey weirdness. For players who enjoy the story side of Age of Wonders 4, this is one of the biggest reasons to jump in.
The new tomes are where the DLC really gets fun
The best part, though, is the new magic. Secrets of the Archmages adds six new Tomes: Abjuration, Gluttony, Burning Passion, Sprite, Weaver, and Cosmos. That means new ways to defend your armies, burn enemies, play with fey powers, use spider-themed tricks, or go completely over the top with cosmic magic. This is exactly where Age of Wonders 4 shines, because every new Tome opens the door to another weird faction idea.
The DLC also adds the Owlkin form, which fits the whole ancient magic theme perfectly. Wise owl people leading a mysterious wizard empire? That is the kind of fantasy nonsense this game was made for. On top of that, Shrouded Isles add hidden pocket dimensions to explore, where players can uncover powerful Secret Spells that feel like forbidden magic rather than normal research options.
There is more packed in too, including new landmarks, wildlife, mythic beasts, a Weaver Spider mount, new banner icons, fresh music, extra traits, and a new interface skin. Alongside the DLC, the free Sprite Update also brings important changes for all players, including a reworked Empire Development Tree, Reaver Culture changes, more customization, and new faction creation options.
So far, players seem to be enjoying the new content because it gives Age of Wonders 4 fans exactly what they want: more builds, more magic, and more strange combinations to test. Some are still discussing balance and value, but the new Tomes, Owlkin, and Shrouded Isles are clearly getting attention.
