Absolum: A Promising New “Rogue ’Em Up”

Absolum: reinventing the Beat ’Em Up for a new generation

The studio behind Streets of Rage 4 has returned with a daring new project that redefines what a beat ’em up can be. Their latest release, Absolum, blends the satisfying rhythm of old-school brawlers with the evolving structure of a roguelike, creating a fast, strategic, and endlessly replayable experience. Developed by Guard Crush Games in partnership with Supamonks and published by Dotemu, the game is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

A new direction for a classic genre

Absolum is a "rogue ’em up", a term that perfectly captures its dual identity, which combines roguelite mechanics and beat 'em up gameplay. Each run reshuffles levels, enemies, and upgrade choices, ensuring that no two playthroughs ever feel the same. Players battle through dynamically generated arenas, learning new skills and unlocking permanent upgrades as they progress. Every defeat becomes a lesson, pushing players to refine their approach and master the game’s tight, combo-based mechanics.

Combat is where Absolum truly shines. Players can chain fluid attacks, dodge at precise moments, and parry blows to counter their opponents. A standout feature allows players to "cash out" their combo meter mid-fight, converting skillful play into devastating finishers. Magical "Arcanas" add an additional strategic layer, letting each hero channel supernatural powers that can shift the tide of battle.

The game features four distinct playable characters, each offering a unique style and rhythm. Karl, a burly dwarf, mixes close-range strength with ranged firepower. Galandra wields her sword with balance and precision, while Cider relies on agility and rapid strikes. Meanwhile, Brome, a frog sorcerer, dominates from afar with powerful spells. These varied playstyles invite experimentation and ensure that every player can find their ideal fighter.

Visually, Absolum is a feast for the eyes. Its hand-drawn animations and vivid color palette give the game a lively, animated feel, while maintaining the clarity needed for high-speed combat. The soundtrack, composed by Yuka Kitamura,  known for her work on Elden Ring and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, adds a grand, orchestral energy that elevates each encounter into something cinematic.

For fans of classic arcade brawlers and newcomers alike, Absolum stands as one of 2025's most exciting and distinctive action games. Visit our comparator to get an Absolum digital code at the best price if you don't want to miss this experience.
