Stardew Valley: 10 years of evolution in full retrospective
A decade after the game became available, Stardew Valley is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a look back at its origins, and a glimpse at its future. To mark the milestone, creator Eric Barone, better known to fans as ConcernedApe, released a special retrospective video reflecting on the game’s development and unveiling new details about the upcoming Update 1.7.
Happy anniversary!
The anniversary video revisits the project's earliest days, including prototype footage from before the game even carried its current name. Barone walks viewers through early builds, abandoned mechanics, and the gradual refinement of systems that would eventually define the farming RPG’s distinctive rhythm, from crop cycles and dungeon crawling to relationship-building in the small-town setting. The retrospective underscores how much the game evolved between its solo development phase and its breakout release in 2016.
What's coming in Update 1.7?
Alongside the historical look back, Barone used the celebration to confirm one of the most requested additions in years: new romance options. Update 1.7 will allow players to marry two long-standing non-playable characters: Clint and Sandy. This will expand the roster of eligible partners for the first time in a major way since the early post-launch updates.
Clint, the town’s blacksmith, has been part of the social fabric of Pelican Town since launch, providing tool upgrades while nursing his own personal insecurities. The update promises new heart events and deeper narrative development for his character. Meanwhile, Sandy, who runs the Oasis shop in the Calico Desert, finally becomes a fully romanceable character after years of fan requests. Her expanded storyline is expected to flesh out a figure who, until now, has had comparatively limited interaction opportunities.
Beyond the new marriage candidates, Update 1.7 will introduce additional content and quality-of-life improvements, though full patch notes have yet to be revealed. Early informations point to expanded family dynamics and further refinements to gameplay systems, continuing Barone's long-standing approach of delivering substantial free updates well after the game's commercial peak.
The 10th anniversary also serves as a reminder of the title's uncommon trajectory. Developed primarily by one person over several years, the game grew from a modest indie homage to farming simulators into a genre-defining success story with a global audience. Ten years on, its steady stream of updates and the personal connection between creator and community remain central to its enduring appeal.
If you are looking for an engaging farming simulator that can make you forget the hassle of your daily life, Stardew Valley stands out as one of the best titles ever released. It's still growing and is now available on newer platforms. Don't forget to visit our comparator if you want to purchase Stardew Valley at the lowest price.
