Highguard was introduced as the final announcement of The Game Awards 2025, and now we know more details about it. The game is a brand-new free-to-play PvP raid shooter, currently in development by Wildlight Entertainment.

Highguard: Is Wildlight's "PvP Raid Shooter" the Next Big Thing or a Phantom Menace?

Because of the fact that the game is developed by a "supergroup" (over 60 veterans from Respawn Entertainment, the creators of Apex Legends and Titanfall), the game has immediately become one of the most talked-about shooting game of 2026. Highguard is scheduled for release on the January 26, 2026, on 3 major platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Highguard aims to be different from other PvP battle royale games. First and foremost, the developer of Highguard, Wildlight, is moving away from the classic battle royale formula. Instead of focusing on a multi-phase approach (like in Apex Legends, where players have to get to the safe zone through different phases), the developers focus on a newer approach. The game focuses on an objective-based system called "PvP Raid."

The players control "arcane gunslingers" called Wardens. These characters combine high-tier gunplay with mythical, magical abilities (e.g., throwing enchanted knives or using spells to manipulate the environment), which contribute to offering a mythical but also very run-and-gun-style gameplay. In the first phase of the game, called "The Shieldbreaker", rival crews battle across the the scenario to secure an artifact called the Shieldbreaker. Once a team secures the artifact, the game shifts to the second phase, called "The Siege". In this phase, the attacking team uses the Shieldbreaker to drop the enemy's defenses and call in massive siege engines. like a "castle-sized tank with a lion's head", which they will use to to destroy the enemy base.

The game's movement system borrows concepts from its former eldest brother, Titanfall, which features fluid traversal like wall-running and also introduces mounted combat, allowing you to fight on horseback across massive maps.

As of mid-January 2026, the game there's not much new information about the game, which that has some fans worried.
