Squadron 42 Reveals New Gameplay Ahead of Its 2027 Release
After years of delays and an unusually long development cycle, Squadron 42 has taken another step towards launch. Cloud Imperium Games has released a new trailer for its single-player sci-fi adventure. The studio has also opened the game's Steam page and confirmed a release window for the second quarter of 2027.
This ambitious project has spent years in development as the single-player counterpart to Star Citizen. Nothing surprising here, as the same is happening for the latter. Star Citizen has been in an ongoilg alpha estate for longer than most people can remember and there is no release date for the game yet. This strikes as quite surprising if we consider that its one of the highest-funded crowdfunding projects of all time. However, Squadron 42 now has an official release window. According to its Steam listing, the game is currently scheduled to arrive between April and June 2027. Nevertheless, the latest announcement should be treated as a renewed target rather than proof that development is finished.
Squadron 42 Shows Off New Gameplay
Under the name The Oath, the new trailer showcases a cinematic presentation of the game. The footage combines space combat, first-person firefights, exploration and story-driven sequences. It offers a glimpse of a campaign that blends the scale of a science-fiction blockbuster with interactive gameplay. In Squadron 42, players will take on the role of a rookie officer in the United Empire of Earth's Navy, who is serving aboard a massive capital ship as a galactic conflict escalates. Players will travel through capital ships, space stations and other locations while participating in a conflict that combines ship-to-ship combat with operations on foot.
Unlike Star Citizen, which centres on a persistent multiplayer universe, Squadron 42 is a standalone, single-player campaign. It is designed to move between intense combat missions and interludes, which gives the narrative room to develop beyond its large-scale battles. The trailer also showcases that the game will offer a broader range of activities than fighting during missions, like first-person platforming, puzzles, hacking, ship customisation and other activities away from the battlefield.
Another big selling point of Squadron 42 is that it stars an extensive cast of actors. Their performances help to bring the story and its characters to life. The lineup includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Andy Serkis, Henry Cavill, Mark Strong, Ben Mendelsohn and John Rhys-Davies, among other familiar names. Cloud Imperium Games has used performance capture to integrate these performances into the game world. The interactions with fellow officers and other characters will be an important part of the campaign, not merely a series of cinematic interludes between missions.
Will Squadron 42 Finally Arrive in 2027?
Squadron 42 has the all the ingredients needed for an ambitious single-player space adventure, including cinematic presentation, a high-profile cast, spacecraft combat and a story set within the universe of Star Citizen. After years of changing plans, the Q2 2027 window gives Cloud Imperium Games a clear target, but players should watch for further evidence that the campaign is approaching completion.
For now, Squadron 42 is scheduled to launch on PC in the second quarter of 2027. You can keep track of the best deals for Squadron 42 with our comparator while hoping that the game finally arrives.
