Dog in the Machine Transforms Robot Dogs into Tactical Geniuses
Dogs are usually known as humanity's loyal companions, but in a city ruled by machines, that loyalty might just turn them into rebels. That's the amusing idea behind Dog in the Machine, a tactical roguelite developed by Studio Chahut and officially released on Steam on September 29, 2026. Rather than relying on fast reflexes or overwhelming firepower, the game encourages players to think carefully, experiment with different approaches, and use everything available on the battlefield to find the best possible solution.
When the Entire Battlefield Becomes a Chain-Reaction Machine
Set in Automatown, a dystopian city where humans have been exiled and robot dogs are considered useless, Dog in the Machine puts players in charge of helping an AutoDog escape the machines' control and reunite with its owner. Despite its rather gloomy setting, the game features colorful visuals, quirky characters, and a good dose of humor. This contrast gives AutoDog's journey a playful personality rather than making it feel like a grim fight for survival. But don't let those adorable robot dogs fool you, because beneath their charming appearance lies a tactical system that requires plenty of careful planning.
Battles take place on relatively small grid-based maps packed with interactive elements, including conveyor belts, switches, explosive obstacles, and enemies that react to their surroundings. Instead of attacking opponents directly, players can push enemy robots into one another, activate devices, or take advantage of their positions to trigger devastating chain reactions. A seemingly simple move can sometimes turn an entire battle around when executed at the right moment. This chain-reaction system makes every battlefield in Dog in the Machine feel like a puzzle with multiple solutions, where creativity can be more valuable than the raw power of an individual attack.
Interestingly, the game doesn't expect players to keep track of every possible outcome in their heads. Its real-time preview system shows how planned actions will unfold, while the rewind feature allows players to test different approaches before committing to a turn. This makes even complicated strategies easier to manage and encourages players to experiment with some truly wild ideas. After all, what's more satisfying than watching a carefully planned move end with a whole group of enemy robots knocking each other to pieces?
However, the battlefield is only half of what makes the game interesting. The Tricks system allows AutoDog to learn new abilities after battles and combine them into more complex moves. While exploring Automatown, players also encounter unusual characters who offer opportunities to buy, trade, upgrade, or collect additional abilities. Together with eight playable dog breeds, procedurally generated levels, and permanent progression between runs, these mechanics open up plenty of possibilities for building different strategies. Instead of simply trying to complete a run, players have a reason to return and discover new Trick combinations they might never have considered before.
After more than a week on the market, Dog in the Machine has received encouraging early feedback. At the time of writing, all 33 user reviews on Steam are positive, although that remains a relatively small sample. KeenGamer also awarded the game an 8.5/10, praising its ability combinations and creative use of environmental interactions. However, the reviewer noted that crowded battles and particularly complicated chain reactions can sometimes make it difficult to follow everything happening on screen, even with the action preview system.
Studio Chahut also released the game's first patch on October 8, addressing several technical issues involving macOS, unexpected game-over situations, and infinite movement loops. Notably, the update also introduced an option to keep detailed information visible between battles following player feedback. It's an encouraging sign that the development team is continuing to refine the experience after launch.
With its combination of tactical roguelite mechanics, puzzle-solving, and a charming sense of humor, Dog in the Machine is worth considering for anyone who enjoys winning through creativity rather than brute force.
