Marathon Finally Opens the Vault

Marathon's biggest PvE update goes live today
Updates & Patches

Marathon is taking a break from making every encounter a showdown against other players. Bungie's latest update officially lands today as part of Season 2, and with it comes Vault Breaker, the game's first dedicated PvE mode. It's one of the most requested additions since launch and offers a completely different way to explore Tau Ceti IV, where the biggest threat comes from the environment and AI enemies rather than another squad waiting to ruin your extraction.

What is Vault Breaker?

Vault Breaker is a new gameplay mode that swaps player-versus-player firefights for a cooperative dungeon-crawling experience set within the mysterious Cryo Archive. Inthis mode, your mission is straightforward: descend deeper into the facility, survive increasingly dangerous waves of UESC forces, crack open vaults, and uncover whatever secrets lie at the bottom. Without enemy Runners hunting you down, the focus shifts from watching your back to managing resources, adapting to tougher encounters, and deciding just how far you're willing to push each expedition.

The mode also introduces a progression system designed to keep players coming back. Every expedition begins with a Sponsored Kit, while successful extractions reward a new resource called Vault Data. Instead of disappearing after each match, Vault Data can be invested into permanent upgrades that strengthen future runs, unlocking better gear, new perks, and more powerful abilities. Loot collected inside Vault Breaker largely stays within the mode, but certain rewards can carry over into Marathon's core experience, giving PvE fans an incentive to venture back into the traditional extraction mode.

Bungie is treating Vault Breaker as a live experiment rather than a permanent feature, for now. The mode will be available from July 21 through August 4, giving the studio two weeks to gather player feedback, tweak the experience, and determine what shape PvE should take in future seasons. If the reception is positive, this could be the foundation for much larger cooperative content planned later this year.

Today's patch doesn't stop there. The update also rolls out a collection of quality-of-life improvements, weapon and balance adjustments, progression tweaks, Armory enhancements, and a long-awaited Solo Queue option for players who prefer tackling Marathon without relying on random teammates. Together, the changes aim to make the extraction shooter more welcoming without sacrificing the tension that defines its core gameplay.

Marathon's gunplay and sci-fi setting have earned plenty of praise, but its unforgiving PvPvE formula has also kept some players at arm's length. Vault Breaker offers a new doorway into that universe, proving that sometimes the best way to survive isn't by outsmarting another player, but by breaking into the vault before everything inside tries to stop you. Remember that you can get a cheap Marathon game key with our comparator if you don't own Bungie's extraction shooter yet.

Why not, right? But honestly, the game doesn't seem to be played much anymore. This update will bring people back for a while, and then what?... These kinds of games lose steam over time. We'll see if they manage to create enticing future updates. Personally, it's not my cup of tea.

Marketed as a PvP game, the addition of a PvE update could help expand the game's community. Why not?

This sounds like the update the game needed from the start. Marathon had a good foundation, but it lacked something more accessible to attract more players.

I still think Bungie is late to the party, but better late than never. A PvE mode can smooth out the learning curve and make the experience less daunting for newcomers.

What leaves me wondering is whether the PvE will be deep or just a limited-time event with recycled missions. The idea is good, but we need to see if it's well executed.

Finally, Marathon is starting to seem more interesting to me. A proper PvE mode breathes new life into it and could attract people who didn't want to rely solely on mining and PvP.

Bungie finally seems to be listening to community feedback. The separate PvE mode from the classic extraction mode offers a genuine alternative and avoids confusing player expectations. However, limiting the experience to two weeks gives the impression of a large public test rather than a permanent addition.

The change of direction seems logical to me. Many players enjoy the Marathon universe without wanting to spend their time facing ultra-competitive teams. A mode focused on exploration, AI enemies, and data retrieval is more likely to highlight the game's atmosphere. The roguelite format also adds an interesting replay value.

Solo queue along with weapon balance adjustments makes the overall extraction experience feel much fairer. Bringing PvE rewards into the main mode is a nice touch for progression. It should pull in plenty of people who stayed away from the heavy PvP focus.
