Marvel Tōkon’s Loki Is Built to Outsmart His Enemies

Loki: The God of Mischief Joins Marvel Tōkon
Gameplay

Loki Laufeyson enters MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls as the God of Mischief and God of Lies, bringing a familiar Marvel identity into Arc System Works’ fast-paced 4v4 fighting system. Raised in Asgard alongside Thor, Loki is secretly the son of Laufey, king of the Frost Giants. However, Tōkon gives the character an interesting twist: rather than appearing purely as a villain, Loki is attempting to turn over a new leaf and become a hero. He joins the Samurai Outriders alongside Ghost Rider, Blade, and Deadpool, creating one of the game's stranger collections of antiheroes.

His inclusion feels particularly appropriate because his powers and personality naturally lend themselves to a fighting game built around assists, team composition, and unpredictable exchanges. Instead of simply translating Loki's magical abilities into conventional attacks, Arc System Works emphasizes his defining characteristic: deception. Illusions, magic, ice, and trickery all become part of his combat identity, making him feel like a character who is constantly manipulating the battlefield and his opponent's expectations.

Loki's Playstyle: Deception Over Direct Confrontation

Loki is designed as a technical, mind-game-oriented fighter rather than a straightforward rushdown character. His attacks can function normally or become feints and counters, allowing players to bait opponents into attacking the wrong target. His Norn Stone can also restrict enemy movement, while ice and magical projectiles give him options for controlling space. This makes Loki particularly interesting when compared with characters from other fighting games. His emphasis on deception recalls characters such as Raven from GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- or other illusion-heavy fighters. Still, his ability to turn apparent attacks into feints and counters gives him a more explicitly psychological identity.

Unlike a conventional zoner, Loki does not necessarily want to keep opponents at maximum distance; instead, he wants them to misunderstand the situation and punish their reactions. That creates a high-risk, high-reward playstyle where knowledge of an opponent's habits becomes extremely valuable. However, Loki's trickery comes with a clear weakness: once players recognize his patterns, his deceptive tools can become much easier to punish.

Early Player Feedback: A Welcome Trickster

Early reactions to Loki have generally focused on how well his gameplay captures the character's mischievous personality. Fighting game communities showed considerable excitement when the final Samurai Outriders team was revealed, although some players questioned Loki's thematic connection to the otherwise ronin-inspired lineup. Since launch, the broader reception to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls has been strongly positive toward its core combat, accessibility, and distinct Arc System Works presentation, although technical issues on PC have generated criticism.

For Loki specifically, his appeal appears strongest among players who enjoy characters built around deception, conditioning, and forcing mistakes rather than relying purely on damage or speed. His effectiveness will likely depend heavily on matchup knowledge and how well players can adapt their illusions and counters to different opponents. That makes Loki an especially intriguing character for the long-term competitive scene: once players understand his tricks, the best Loki players will need to invent new ones.
Loki seems really well thought out for this game! I like the idea that he's not just a classic "spellcaster" but a real psychological character, with his feints and fake attacks that force the opponent to guess.

Having Loki make you hesitate before attacking fits him way better than just throwing magic around, and it should make some matches pretty unpredictable.

Loki looks like a perfect fit for this game. The illusion and clone mechanics sound really fun, and I can already imagine some crazy team combos with him. Definitely one of the characters I'm most interested in trying.
