Here's how Dying Light 2 got its realistic parkour moves
With the release date closing in, Techland has been releasing more behind-the-scenes content for Dying Light 2: Stay Human to maintain the hype. One of the game’s most prominent features is its realistic parkour, which is absolutely necessary for avoiding the ravenous zombies infesting the city. Techland has made sure Dying Light 2’s parkour looks both natural and cinematic. For that, they turned to the creator of parkour himself, actor and stunt choreographer David Belle. See him in action here:
Running for your life
According to game designer Tymon Smektala:
"We have an adaptation of skills and moves that people who practice this real-life sport do. We have worked with David Belle—the father of Parkour—and we have used his experience, his insights, and his feedback to create something that I hope looks very good on the screen, very realistic.”
Of course, to gamify parkour itself, the game employed certain mechanics that make parkour intuitive and easy to use for players. This means having slow motion or “bullet-time” to help them perform certain moves without relying on awareness or athletic ability. You can also pick up abilities from the parkour skill tree.
Smektala adds that parkour will largely be the same throughout all the difficulty levels; the major difference lies in the damage one takes with falling from heights—the higher the difficulty, the more damage you take from a bad landing.
Dying Light 2 is almost here
There’s a lot to look forward to with Dying Light 2, from its co-op gameplay to its guaranteed five years’ worth of content.
