Discover Herdling’s journey through mountain wilderness

Herdling: Bonding through the mountain wilds

Developed by Okomotive, the Swiss studio behind the FAR series, Herdling is a testament to innovative game design, blending emotional storytelling with unique mechanics. Published by Panic, known for Firewatch, the game's development focused on creating lifelike animal behavior inspired by real-world creatures like alpacas and mountain goats. Okomotive's team faced challenges transitioning from 2D to 3D environments, particularly in designing a camera that keeps both the player and their herd in focus. Drawing from Himalayan landscapes and Bulgarian Kukeri folklore, they crafted a visually striking, slightly eerie world that feels both fantastical and grounded. The wordless narrative, conveyed through visuals and interactions, emphasizes emotional depth, with a focus on intuitive herding mechanics that evolved from early “Roomba-like” prototypes to a polished system.

The essence of the game

In Herdling, players embody a nomadic shepherd guiding a herd of yeti-like Calicorns through a post-apocalyptic alpine realm. The game centers on exploration, survival, and forging bonds with these creatures across stunning mountain landscapes, foggy forests, and forgotten valleys. The journey is fraught with eerie dangers and environmental puzzles, making trust and companionship central to the experience. The hand-drawn, cinematic visuals create an immersive atmosphere, blending beauty with subtle menace.

Key features include a unique herding mechanic where players indirectly guide Calicorns by positioning themselves strategically, triggering dynamic stampede sequences after feeding them plants. Emotional bonding is core—players can name and play with Calicorns, each with distinct personalities, fostering a sense of connection. The game's environments challenge players to navigate cliffs, crevices, and enemies while solving light puzzles, such as using the herd's strength to clear obstacles. An easy mode ensures Calicorns remain safe, preserving the emotional experience. The animation, informed by real animal studies, gives Calicorns lifelike movements, setting the game apart.

For comparison, Herdling shares thematic similarities with The Last Guardian, another game emphasizing companionship with fantastical creatures, though Herdling distinguishes itself with its herding focus and open alpine world.
