Honoring Tomonobu Itagaki, The Fearless Mind of Ninja Gaiden
The gaming world mourns the loss of Tomonobu Itagaki, the legendary Japanese designer best known as the creative force behind Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden 4. Reports surfaced on October 16, 2025, confirming his passing at the age of 58. A prewritten farewell message, posted to his official Facebook page by his family, marked the moment — a heartfelt note reflecting on his lifelong battles, achievements, and regrets over not being able to deliver one last game to his fans.
Itagaki’s influence on the industry is undeniable. Joining Tecmo in the early 1990s, he rose to fame as the head of Team Ninja, redefining 3D fighting and action games with his trademark intensity, bold character design, and technical precision. His Dead or Alive series brought fluid combat and striking visuals to the forefront, while 2004’s Ninja Gaiden revival set a new bar for challenge and style in the action genre.
Following his departure from Tecmo amid legal disputes, Itagaki founded Valhalla Game Studios, releasing Devil’s Third and later launching Itagaki Games in 2021. Despite mixed results, he remained a symbol of creative defiance — a developer who valued gameplay mastery above all else.
Tributes have since poured in from across the gaming world. Tekken’s Katsuhiro Harada, a longtime friend and rival, expressed deep sorrow, while Team Ninja released a statement honoring his contributions and vowing to carry forward his legacy.
Tomonobu Itagaki’s career was marked by passion, controversy, and an uncompromising vision. Though he has left this world, his games — and the countless players inspired by his philosophy — ensure that his spirit will never fade.
