Elden Ring Nightreign draws millions despite mixed first impressions

FromSoftware’s latest release, Elden Ring Nightreign, is off to a blazing start—drawing millions of players within its first 24 hours, even as early feedback paints a more complex picture. Interest in the title had been steadily building since its reveal at The Game Awards in December 2024, and anticipation hit new heights following a cinematic launch trailer released in late May, showcasing the game’s co-op roguelike structure and darker tone—a bold departure from the sprawling solo experience of 2022’s Elden Ring.

Launched on May 30, Elden Ring Nightreign surged past 300,000 concurrent players on Steam, peaking at over 313,000 just hours after release. The co-op-focused spin-off quickly climbed into Steam’s top five most-played games, trailing only massive multiplayer staples like Dota 2 and PUBG. FromSoftware later confirmed the game had reached over two million players across all platforms on day one—a strong start for a title some viewed as a risky pivot from the beloved original formula.

Currently, Elden Ring Nightreign holds a “Mixed” rating on Steam, with around 64% positive reviews. One of the major complaints centers on the lack of a two-player mode, which forces duos to team up with a random third player. Additionally, the absence of built-in voice chat or effective communication tools has made coordination difficult for many groups.

FromSoftware has since acknowledged these issues. In a recent interview, game director Junya Ishizaki discussed the feedback, noting that a duo-only mode is being actively considered for a future update.

Elden Ring Nightreign Still Gaining Momentum

A day-one patch delivered various balance tweaks and bug fixes, but performance issues persist—particularly for PC users with newer graphics cards. Another update, planned for next week, aims to improve the solo experience, which currently presents a significantly higher difficulty curve compared to full co-op teams.

Despite early criticisms, Elden Ring Nightreign is undeniably a commercial success. It was the most wishlisted game on Steam prior to launch and continues to generate buzz across communities. Early estimates suggest the game sold over two million copies within its first few hours, and that number is expected to grow as updates roll out and features evolve.

Whether Elden Ring Nightreign becomes a lasting hit or remains a bold experiment in co-op design remains to be seen. But one thing’s for certain: FromSoftware’s leap into team-based gameplay has made a major impact—sparking both celebration and debate among fans of the franchise.
