Dune: Awakening pre-orders are open
Despite an upcoming release scheduled for May 20, there were many unkowns about Dune: Awakening. Developer Funcom hadn't talked much about the monetization model for the game and players who wanted to dive into this incredible survival experience set in the Dune universe didn't know what to expect. However, the studio released a video this weekend where it resolves many doubts about the future of the game and reveals interesting details about its future. In a very surprising move, the Norwegian publisher has opted to avoid Early Access and also revealed that the game will not have a monthly subscription.
A risky launch?
According to the information revealed by Funcom, the game to be released in May will be complete. The developer studio plans to release post-launch content in the from of free updates that will be available to all those who own the game. Also, a series of DLC will be released sometime after launch. However, their content will be totally optional and you won't really need to buy them to enjoy the unique survival experience that Dune: Awakening offers. The footage of the game revealed so far showed impressive graphics and exciting gameplay features. Opting for a launch without Early Access surely points at that, but the massive testing and optimization required to achieve an optimal release under these conditions is hardly ever accomplished. Also, Dune: Awakening is an MMO experience, and this type of monetization model where you don't have to pay a subscription to play the game sets it apart from its competitors.
Funcom has demonstrable experience with survival adventures and MMOs as the creators of Conan Exiles. Age of Conan, The Secret World, and Anarchy Online. However, if the studio accomplishes a launch without any significant issues it will definitely be a feat. We can only hope for the best as Dune: Awakening looks like a solid candidate to be a hit in a genre that feels stagnant over the years. A game that feels like a breath of fresh air would definitely receive a warm welcome from the huge community that loves the universe created by Frank Herbert.
