CODE VEIN II Details Expanded Combat and Partner System
Bandai Namco has released a new gameplay overview video for CODE VEIN II, offering an in-depth look at how the upcoming action RPG expands on the foundations of its predecessor. The footage highlights refinements to combat, deeper character customization, and a redesigned Partner System that plays a central role in both strategy and survivability. CODE VEIN II is currently scheduled to launch on January 30, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The reveal focuses on an evolved combat system that continues to revolve around draining enemies of blood to generate Ichor, the resource used to activate powerful abilities known as Formae. Players equip specialized back-mounted gear called Jails, which not only determine base stats but also unlock different Drain Attacks. These mechanics encourage players to adapt their playstyle depending on enemy types, terrain, and encounter intensity.
The video also introduces a broader arsenal of weapons, including new additions such as Twin Blades and Rune Blades, alongside returning favorites like greatswords and bayonets. Combined with the flexible Blood Code system, players can seamlessly switch between builds and combat roles, reinforcing the game’s emphasis on experimentation and customization. Boosters further enhance this system by activating build-specific traits that reward thoughtful preparation.
The Partner System is a game changer
One of the most notable additions in CODE VEIN II is the all-new Partner System. Companions are no longer limited to basic AI support; instead, they are integrated directly into moment-to-moment gameplay. Players can summon a Partner to fight alongside them during standard encounters, providing additional firepower and tactical coverage. For more demanding situations, particularly boss battles, players can choose the Assimilation option to merge a Partner's abilities with their own in order to gain temporary stat increases and enhanced attacks.
Partners also grant Link Traits and Partner Trait Bonuses. Link Traits provide active bonuses as long as the bond between the player and the Partner remains intact, but these effects can be weakened or lost if the Partner takes significant damage. In contrast, Partner Trait Bonuses are passive effects that remain active at all times, offering steady advantages such as improved attributes or unique combat effects.
Another strategic element tied to the Partner System is the Restorative Offering. When the player is defeated, a Partner can revive them once, preventing an immediate game over. However, this comes at a cost, as the Partner becomes unavailable afterward, forcing players to weigh the risks of pushing forward without support.
Beyond combat, the trailer confirms an expanded character creation system, allowing players to fine-tune physical features, outfits, and overall appearance with greater detail than before. These options help define the player’s Revenant Hunter as they explore a world shaped by catastrophe and lingering supernatural threats.
An exciting sequel with enhanced gameplay
Narratively, CODE VEIN II is set against the backdrop of a devastated world facing extinction following a calamity known as the Resurgence. Players work alongside allies such as Lou, a Revenant capable of traversing time, to uncover the truth behind the disaster and confront the mysterious Luna Rapacis. The story unfolds across both past and present settings, tying character relationships directly into gameplay progression.
With its expanded systems and heavier focus on partner-driven mechanics, the sequel to CODE VEIN aims to deliver a more strategic and personalized experience. The newly released overview trailer provides the clearest indication yet of Bandai Namco's ambitions for the sequel, positioning it as a more complex and refined evolution of the series.
