Borderlands 4 launches without cross-save, updates coming soon
Gearbox Software has confirmed in a post on Steam that Borderlands 4 will be missing a couple of key features when it launches this fall. Cross-save and cross-progression—two of the most requested options in modern multiplayer games—won’t be available at release on September 12, 2025. This means players won’t be able to carry progress or saves across different platforms right away. However, Gearbox assured fans that both features are planned for a future update, acknowledging that they’re “on our radar” and thanking players for their patience.
The news comes at a time when cross-play is becoming standard across the industry. While Borderlands 4 will support cross-play at launch, the lack of cross-save and cross-progression is still disappointing for fans who expected more flexibility. In an era where exclusivity is fading and games are increasingly playable anywhere, these features have become an important part of the player experience. Knowing they’ll arrive later softens the blow, but it remains a gap at launch.

However, Cross-save and Cross-progression support will not be available at launch. But Gearbox has confirmed they are looking into it.

An Arsenal That Redefines Excess
That said, Borderlands 4 is still pushing boundaries in ways that remind players why the series is so beloved. Alongside gameplay refinements, Gearbox has promised a staggering 30 billion unique guns, thanks to a new weapon-generation system that allows components to be mixed across eight manufacturers. It’s an outrageous number that fits perfectly with Borderlands’ tradition of turning excess into entertainment.
Borderlands 4 will arrive on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 12, followed by a Nintendo Switch 2 version on October 3. Even with some features missing at launch, the scale of its arsenal and the promise of future updates make this one of 2025’s most anticipated releases.
