Mafia: The Old Country is a story-driven prequel that returns the franchise to its roots in early 20th-century Sicily. Set amid rugged hills, fading aristocratic estates, and tight-knit villages, the game explores the Mafia's earliest form long before its rise in America. Players become Enzo Favara, a young outsider pulled into a world defined by vendettas, honor-bound loyalties, and the brutal codes of an emerging criminal order.

Departing from the roaring American cities of previous entries, The Old Country embraces a rural, old-world setting shaped by feudal remnants, political unrest, and crumbling noble power. Instead of depicting the Mafia at its structured, profit-driven peak, the game offers a grittier look at its origins, focusing on tradition, betrayal, and survival over capitalism and corruption.

In a major shift for the series, Hangar 13 replaces open-world exploration with a tightly directed, linear narrative, allowing for sharper pacing and deeper emotional impact. Players traverse interconnected environments like village hubs, countryside routes, and fortified estates, which have been designed for immersion rather than sandbox freedom.

Cultural authenticity is central, with Sicilian language, customs, religion, and superstition woven into both story and gameplay. Historical detail, cinematic presentation, and a focus on identity and power reshape the Mafia mythos, making Mafia: The Old Country a modern reimagining of organized crime's beginnings.

I've been a Mafia fan for a long time. I even played Mafia 3 twice, the most hated of the saga, this one is a real disappointment! Talking about the story, the first parts are very long and boring. The graphics aren't very good, and neither is the optimization. Even with my 4080 running at full power, the trees look blurry. While the frame rate is high, there are occasional unexplained jerks.

The setting is perfect, perfect to immerse yourself in Sicily, with an impressive soundtrack. The plot is, in part, predictable, but the narrative, characters and dialogues are at a very high level. It is a pleasure to listen to such realistic and credible conversations, far from the flat and artificial dialogues that abound in other titles.

Mafia: The Old Country felt like a soulless love story to me, rather than the authentic mafia drama of the previous games. I love Mafia I and Mafia II, I had a lot of fun with them and I think both are great quality and exceptional titles with good storytelling. So I also had high hopes for this new Mafia. But it turned out to be a big disappointment in almost every aspect. A pity

It's not my favorite of the series but it's fun, although the mission structure gets repetitive. Most levels after the first few hours are basically stealth - shootout - knife fight or, in some cases, stealth - shootout - chase scene - knife fight. I find the characters excellent, but the story falls a bit short for me; it gets a bit too predictable at some points.

This game feels very different from previous Mafia titles, and not just because it's set in Italy. The main difference is its highly linear progression. You're thrown straight into each chapter with little to no free roam like in the previous games, so you won't spend a lot of time collecting cars or horses or customizing outfits. Something I completely welcome, truth be told.

For a low-budget game, the result is pretty good. Rendering on UE 5 is magnificent, offering superb panoramas. The soundtrack does the job, without being on a par with Mafia 2. Like 80% of current games, combat is far too simple, with extremely basic AI serving as targets. The story is the game's strongest point, well-written and well-paced, with a few memorable moments. Most of the characters are well-rounded and engaging.
