Rainbow Six Siege could become free-to-play
Rainbow Six Siege is definitely on the rise lately. Ubisoft's shooter doesn't seem to be suffering from the effects of age five years after its release. The title has managed to maintain itself both in the hearts of the players and on the eSports scene, as proved by the Six Invitational which took place near Montreal recently. Rainbow Six Siege is doing so well, that it reached its biggest peak of players connected to Steam simultaneously last weekend.
Last week, two new agents, Iana and Oryx, were introduced as part of the announcement of the Season 1 of Year 5, which will begin in March with Operation Void Edge. It is this rhythm of years divided into seasons, each of them bringing their share of new features, that have kept Rainbow Six Siege in the place it occupies, but the model of the game may be changing in the future.
Indeed, in an interview with PC Gamer, Leroy Athanassoff, Game Director of Rainbow Six Siege, spoke of the future of the game, and in particular about its business model. In other words, the possibility that the game will become free-to-play in the future:
“It’s a company decision. I think on the development team we want that at some point. We want the game to be accessible to everyone”
It is true that the Rainbow Six Siege does not depend only on the purchase of the basic game, and it has sources of income over the long term such as in-game purchases which include cosmetic items, Year Passes, or a variety packs. It is, therefore, not so surprising that Ubisoft may consider making it free-to-play in the future.
However, Leroy Athanassoff also clarified that before being able to envisage a free-to-play model, Rainbow Six Siege must first make sure to offer adequate functionalities for such a change and get rid of the smurfing problem that the game is suffering, which is not so easy to solve and affects a number of competitive games.
The future will tell us if the team's desire to see Rainbow Six Siege become free-to-play will take shape in a more or less near future. In the meantime, you can always get it at the best price through our comparison engine.
