Dragon Age II is a story-driven action RPG developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It continues the Dragon Age universe by shifting the focus from global catastrophe to a more personal, character-centered journey. The game follows Hawke, a displaced refugee who escapes the chaos of Ferelden and travels to the Free Marches, ultimately arriving in the city of Kirkwall.
Once in Kirkwall, Hawke begins as a nobody struggling to survive in a city full of political tension, social inequality, and rising unrest. Over time, their actions and choices shape their reputation, eventually leading them to become the celebrated "Champion of Kirkwall." The story is uniquely framed through the unreliable narration of Varric Tethras, who recounts Hawke’s rise and downfall during an interrogation by a Chantry Seeker.
Unlike traditional heroic fantasy tales, the game emphasizes conflict between factions rather than a single overriding evil. The growing divide between mages and templars drives much of the narrative, forcing Hawke into difficult moral decisions that influence the balance of power within the city.
Through companion relationships, branching dialogue, and tactical combat encounters, Dragon Age II delivers a compact but emotionally charged experience. Its design prioritizes storytelling, character development, and consequence-driven choices, making it a distinctive entry in the role-playing genre.
