Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathmaster A Skaven Assassin’s Rise to Power

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathmaster — Skaven Stealth Unleashed
Gameplay

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathmaster puts players behind the eyes of Vihneek, an ambitious Skaven assassin belonging to the secretive Clan Eshin. Rather than playing a heroic Stormcast Eternal, players experience the Mortal Realms from the perspective of a creature whose greatest weapons are deception, speed, and murder. Vihneek must complete deadly commands and climb the Skaven hierarchy, eventually seeking the prestigious title of Deathmaster.

Stealth, Traps, and Ratman Cunning

Gameplay combines 2D action-platforming with stealth, emphasizing observation and experimentation. Vihneek can study enemy behavior, exploit openings, use heightened senses, set traps, and perform assassinations. Warpstone provides progression, unlocking abilities and tools while different clan territories introduce new enemies and behavioral patterns. This makes each encounter feel more like a puzzle than a conventional hack-and-slash battle.

A Stealthy Mix of Ninja Tactics and Dead Cells Action

The closest comparison is Mark of the Ninja, particularly its emphasis on stealth, enemy awareness, environmental manipulation, and solving encounters through a flexible toolkit. Recent previews specifically praised Deathmaster for recreating that style of 2D stealth gameplay. Dead Cells is another useful comparison for its fast movement, exploration, combat, and progression, although Deathmaster appears substantially more focused on stealth and assassination than Dead Cells. Its strongest selling point is therefore the combination of Skaven personality and stealth-puzzle design. Early previews have praised its multiple routes, traps, movement, and experimentation.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathmaster could be especially attractive to players who enjoy Mark of the Ninja, indie action-platformers, or Warhammer but want something very different from the franchise's usual army-based or third-person combat games. With a planned 2027 release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2, it has the potential to become one of the more distinctive Age of Sigmar adaptations.
I'm not quite sure what to think, but I don't think Deathmaster is for me. The concept of playing a Skaven assassin in stealth mode might be interesting, but the 2D gameplay doesn't particularly appeal to me. Then again, I can understand why it might appeal to fans of the universe.

Deathmaster est une excellente surprise pour les amateurs de Warhammer, mais il ne révolutionne pas le genre du stealth 2D : c'est un mélange efficace de Mark of the Ninja et Hollow Knight, avec une patte Skaven unique.
Deathmaster is an excellent surprise for Warhammer fans, but it does not revolutionize the 2D stealth genre: it is an effective mix of Mark of the Ninja and Hollow Knight, with a unique Skaven touch.

Interesting. Skaven are pretty evil if you're into Warhammer lore, and there has been no exception to that rule so far, so it might be hard to sympathize with the protagonist. On other hand, it does look really cool!

The first in-depth Developer Diary for *Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathmaster* offers a fascinating journey into the game design, narrative, and refined stealth mechanics driving the blood-soaked path of Vihneek, a lethal assassin from the Skaven’s iconic Clan Eshin. In *Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Deathmaster*, players step into the role of Vihneek for a dark, visceral, and uncompromising adventure. Unlike classic action-platformers, the Skaven approach demands meticulous control over space, light sources, and ambient sound. Vihneek can utilize handholds, beams, and conduits to navigate above enemy lines, analyzing guards' fields of vision before delivering lethal strikes or slipping unseen through the shadows. The Clan Eshin arsenal—featuring poisoned blades, warpstone shuriken, grappling hooks, and smoke bombs—allows players to shape encounters in real-time, isolating sentinels or sowing panic within enemy ranks. Enemy behavior goes beyond simple pre-set patrols.

The stealth part could be really good. Figuring out where the enemies are and how to get past them should keep things interesting.

definitely reminding me of Mark of the Ninja. A Skaven Clan Eshin themed Mark of the Ninja seems like a brilliant basis for a game to me
