WARDOGS has been improved to enter Early Access

WARDOGS: first patch and launch trailer
Release date Updates & Patches Early access

The waiting is over. WARDOGS is officially charging into Early Access today, and Bulkhead is not sending players into battle with the same build they experienced during the latest beta. The studio has spent the time since testing tearing into the game, changing systems, reworking progression, tuning vehicles, fixing technical problems, and preparing its multiplayer infrastructure for the much larger fight ahead.

The release of the official launch trailer now sets the tone. It is loud, chaotic and unapologetically focused on the scale of WARDOGS' battles, throwing infantry, armored vehicles, helicopters and heavy weaponry into the same giant sandbox. If the beta was the dress rehearsal, this is where the real show begins.

WARDOGS Hits Early Access With a Battlefield Full of New Tricks

WARDOGS has already had an unusual journey into Early Access. Its latest beta attracted a huge audience, with the game surpassing 200,000 concurrent players on Steam. That gave Bulkhead an enormous amount of player feedback and gameplay data to analyze before launch. The developers have clearly been busy with that information. The new update contains changes across practically every corner of the game, suggesting that the beta was a stress test for the systems Bulkhead now expects players to live with throughout Early Access.

Perhaps the most noticeable difference will be progression. Bulkhead has reworked the XP curve to make climbing the ranks a considerably longer journey. Progression between levels 10 and 20 has been slowed down, while the curve has been adjusted at higher levels as well. The idea is to prevent experienced players from racing through the available content and reaching the end of the progression system almost immediately. That is particularly important, since WARDOGS needs players to have reasons to return week after week, rather than giving everyone a mountain of unlocks that disappears after a few marathon sessions.

The progression overhaul also changes the way players unlock vehicles. Several machines have been moved to different levels or progression categories, forcing returning beta players to learn a slightly different route toward their favorite toys. The Heavy Tank, for example, has been moved into the Driver progression system, while the Artillery Tank has been pushed much further up the ladder. Other vehicles have also changed positions, creating a progression path that should better reflect how Bulkhead wants players to gradually become more dangerous behind the wheel.

The game's economy has received its own balancing pass. Some pieces of equipment now cost more, while several vehicles have become cheaper. Forward Operating Bases, artillery and other powerful tools have been repriced, meaning players will have to make more deliberate decisions about what they can afford to bring into a fight.

Vehicles are obviously a major part of the game's identity, so Bulkhead has spent plenty of time tuning how they behave. Helicopter controls have been adjusted, tank aiming has received fixes, turret rotation has been restricted to prevent operators from snapping around unrealistically quickly, and the Z20 Lakota has received several handling improvements. Camera effects have also been toned down in places to make vehicle combat less disorienting. The developers have also changed how certain heavy deployables interact with loadouts. Artillery pieces and other powerful equipment now consume more space, putting greater pressure on players to decide what they actually need before heading into battle.

It is a small but important shift. WARDOGS is not supposed to be a playground where everyone brings everything. The point is to make those battlefield choices matter.

The less glamorous fixes might matter most

Bulkhead has addressed numerous server and matchmaking issues, improved the server browser and fixed problems affecting community servers. Voice chat has also received attention, including fixes for situations where communication could stop working after connection problems.

The technical side has received an equally extensive cleanup. The new build includes crash fixes, improvements to GPU crash reporting and changes designed to reduce hitching. Problems involving DLSS Frame Generation, network calls and disconnected players have also been tackled. The result should be a more reliable foundation for Early Access, even if players never notice most of the work unless something goes wrong.

The studio has also continued preparing its defenses against one of the biggest threats facing any competitive multiplayer game: cheaters. New reporting and moderation improvements have been introduced, while several exploits have been removed. Bulkhead has been particularly vocal about its intention to deal with cheating before it becomes a serious problem, rather than waiting until the community is already frustrated. That philosophy is going to be important as WARDOGS grows. A huge launch can create enormous momentum, but keeping those players around requires a battlefield they actually want to return to.

Early Access is here!

WARDOGS is arriving today with its foundations reshaped by the players who have already taken it for a spin. The game is still very much a work in progress, as any Early Access title should be, but Bulkhead appears determined to make this next stage feel like a genuine evolution rather than the beta with a new label. You can pre-load the game now and get ready to play as soon as the servers are available.
