Rogue Prince of Persia Celebrates With a Major Anniversary Update
More than a year after leaving Early Access, The Rogue Prince of Persia received its Anniversary Update 1.1.0 on September 17. The update arrives after Evil Empire’s roguelite passed one million players across all platforms, marking the game’s next major step following its 1.0 release. Rather than simply adding a few anniversary rewards, the studio has taken the opportunity to look back at how the community actually played the game throughout its first year. So, what does the Anniversary Update bring, and how much does it change The Rogue Prince of Persia?
The Anniversary Update makes The Rogue Prince of Persia easier to learn, deeper to build, and harder to master
Evil Empire says it analyzed player progression to identify the points where people were most likely to stop playing, particularly during the opening hours. That approach matters because The Rogue Prince of Persia has already earned praise for its fast movement, parkour, and combat, while its build depth and long-term player retention still had room to grow.
The Anniversary Update is therefore much more than a simple content drop. It reworks how the game introduces new players, expands build possibilities, and increases the challenge as players push deeper into each run.
For the early game, Evil Empire has focused heavily on onboarding and pacing. Wallrun now plays a more important role in progression, while several early biomes have been shortened and rebalanced in terms of enemy density, loot, and system unlocks. The goal is to make the roguelite loop and its core mechanics easier to understand before players face tougher challenges.
The more significant long-term changes, however, come from the expanded build system.
Freeze arrives as a new elemental effect, allowing players to immobilize enemies while creating additional interactions with other elemental statuses. Alongside it comes the new Affix system for weapons and tools, adding a wide range of modifiers that can change how individual pieces of gear perform from one run to the next.
As a result, choosing gear is no longer simply about finding a familiar favorite weapon. An item that would normally be overlooked can suddenly become valuable if its Affixes fit the current build.
The Anniversary Update also introduces several notable new options:
- Two new weapons: Shamal Crescent and Blazing Cuffs.
- New tools including Freezing Arrow Launcher, Ice Trap, and Corrupted Turret.
- New Medallions supporting Freeze, Critical, and other build directions.
Replayability is also expanded through Arena rooms, where players can voluntarily enter multi-wave combat challenges in exchange for additional rewards. A new Victory Screen, Run History, and UI timer also make it easier to track runs, builds, and personal achievements.
While the opening hours have become more approachable, the late game is moving in the opposite direction.
Enemy density has been increased across several later biomes, while certain enemies have been adjusted to apply more pressure. Nogai and Corrupted Nogai have both received balance changes, with Corrupted Nogai also gaining changes to attack patterns, presentation, and cinematics to make the final boss encounter feel more fitting as the climax of a run.
Some previously dominant build options have also been toned down to create more room for alternatives. Rather than allowing a handful of weapons or Critical-focused builds to overshadow everything else, Evil Empire is pushing the system toward a healthier balance where synergy between Affixes, Medallions, and elemental effects plays a larger role.
These are only the biggest changes included in the Anniversary Update. Evil Empire has published extensive full patch notes covering many more balance adjustments, quality-of-life improvements, enemy and weapon changes, and bug fixes, which players can explore in detail on the game’s official website.
After one year, the Anniversary Update feels more like a broad refinement of The Rogue Prince of Persia than a simple anniversary celebration. The game is now easier to understand at the beginning, more varied when building each run, and more demanding as players move deeper into the late game.
Will these changes be enough to bring former players back and help The Rogue Prince of Persia keep its community engaged for longer?
