Build, farm and explore in the ambitious world of The Ranchers

The Ranchers could become the ultimate countryside life simulator
Early access

The Ranchers has been a long time coming. The project first gained attention in 2022, when RedPilz Studio launched a Kickstarter campaign and raised more than €245,000 from over 3,600 backers. What began as an ambitious idea for a countryside life simulator gradually grew into a much larger game, mixing farming, home building, business management, exploration and multiplayer inside one open world.

The main idea is simple: leave the stress of city life behind, buy a piece of land and build a new future in the countryside. From there, you can grow crops, raise animals, complete orders and expand your ranch as the money starts rolling in. You are also free to construct barns, greenhouses, fences and even a multi-storey house that can be decorated to suit your style.

More than just another farming sim

What makes The Ranchers stand out is how much there is to do beyond planting seeds and feeding chickens. Water and electricity need to be managed, while wells, sprinklers, solar panels and wind turbines can make the ranch more efficient. Players can also drive into town, visit different shops, buy new vehicles and explore the surrounding world.

Four-player online co-op may be the game’s most exciting feature. Running a ranch alone can be relaxing, but sharing the workload with friends opens the door to plenty of memorable moments. One player can handle the animals while another works on construction or heads into town for supplies. Of course, things can quickly become less peaceful when someone starts driving recklessly and attracts the attention of the local police.

The Ranchers feels a little like Ranch Simulator, but with a broader focus on everyday life, exploration and long-term progression. There are also hints of Stardew Valley in its fresh-start fantasy, although this game aims for a much larger and more realistic 3D sandbox.

Its Early Access launch still has some rough edges, including technical issues and systems that need more polish. Even so, the foundation is packed with potential. Once performance improves, multiplayer becomes smoother and the unfinished features are expanded, The Ranchers could easily grow into one of the best farming and life sims out there.

Co-op fits this kind of game really well because there is always something different to do. One person can focus on farming while someone else keeps expanding the ranch, so everyone stays busy.

This has everything I enjoy in a life sim—farming, animals, building, and co-op. Looking forward to seeing how it grows during Early Access!
