The Outer Worlds 2 teases its new character-building system
The Outer Worlds 2 is turning up the heat on character customization, teasing a brand-new character-building system that promises to give players more freedom and depth than ever before. While the original The Outer Worlds was a hit, it fell short in offering a wide variety of meaningful character builds. Now, Obsidian Entertainment looks to level up the RPG experience with a sequel that leans deeper into specialized playstyles and personalized adventures.
You Can Go Wild With the New System
In a recent interview with IGN, lead designers Matt Singh and Kyle Koenig shared exciting details about their vision for The Outer Worlds 2. At the heart of the new system is an emphasis on player choice and meaningful consequences, with a clear goal: make every decision matter.
“We really wanted to lean into synergies, looking at how player Skills, Traits, and Perks can all infuse into interesting builds that play off of other systems.”
— Matt Singh, Design Director
One of the most notable changes is the game's move away from the “jack-of-all-trades” character approach. Instead, players will be encouraged to create highly specialized builds, each with its own unique strengths and gameplay style. The sequel also introduces new perks—including ones like Psychopath and Serial Killer—that grant unique advantages, such as permanent health boosts.
The Outer Worlds 2 will also overhaul the original skill system, offering individual skills with clearer distinctions and deeper functionality. This change allows for more refined and creative character development, letting players truly craft a build that fits their story and style.
The Outer Worlds 2 is shaping up to be more than just a sequel—it’s a bold evolution of Obsidian’s acclaimed RPG formula. While there’s no confirmed release date yet, the game is slated for a 2025 launch.
