Starfield lands on PS5 alongside a major update and a new DLC
Bethesda Game Studios has delivered one of the most significant updates in the story of its sci-fi RPG Starfield, combining three major milestones into a single release: the free “Free Lanes” update, the paid Terran Armada expansion, and the game’s official launch on PlayStation 5. Together, these additions represent a substantial evolution of the sci-fi RPG, both in content and accessibility.
Better than ever
After more than two years as an Xbox and PC exclusive, Starfield is now available to PlayStation 5 players worldwide. This release opens the door to a new audience and includes platform-specific enhancements such as improved graphical performance and integration with the DualSense controller. The PS5 version is positioned as a technically refined edition of the game, benefiting from all prior updates and optimizations.
Alongside the new platform launch, Bethesda has introduced the Free Lanes update, a comprehensive and free overhaul aimed at improving exploration and immersion. One of its most notable additions is a new space travel system that allows players to manually navigate between planets within the same star system, reducing the reliance on fast travel and creating a more continuous gameplay experience.
Beyond traversal changes, the update introduces a wide range of improvements and new features, including:
- Additional points of interest and dynamic encounters in space
- Expanded crafting systems and deeper equipment customization
- New vehicles, such as the “Moon Jumper,” for planetary exploration
- Improvements to outpost management and user interface design
- Refinements to combat mechanics and ship-building systems
These enhancements reflect Bethesda's response to player feedback, particularly around immersion and the depth of exploration.
Complementing the free update is the release of Terran Armada, a premium downloadable content expansion similar to Shattered Space that adds a new narrative storyline to the game. The DLC focuses on a rising robotic faction that poses a major threat across the Settled Systems, introducing fresh conflicts and expanding the game’s lore.
The Terran Armada expansion includes:
- A new story campaign centered on a robotic adversary
- Additional missions and explorable locations
- A recruitable robotic companion
- New endgame content and progression rewards
Early indications suggest that the expansion may also introduce new gameplay systems and previously unseen areas, further broadening the scope of the game.
Taken together, the PlayStation 5 release, Free Lanes update, and Terran Armada DLC signal a pivotal moment for Starfield. This combined rollout functions as a kind of relaunch, significantly enhancing the overall experience while bringing the game to a wider global audience.
