Longer queues, better raids? ARC Raiders tests new matchmaking

Smarter matchmaking arrives in ARC Raiders update 1.38.0
Updates & Patches

ARC Raiders has rolled out Store Update 1.38.0 across every platform, and while it is smaller than a full content drop, it could make a noticeable difference to everyday raids. The headline change is a new round of matchmaking optimization, with Embark Studios testing adjustments designed to create fairer and more enjoyable encounters. The update also marks the latest Expedition Departure and adds two fresh color options for an existing outfit.

Matchmaking is easily the most interesting part of the update. Embark says the system can struggle during low-population hours, in certain regions or when players select specific map conditions. The revised algorithm will now work harder to find squads that better match both your squad size and established playstyle. That extra searching may mean slightly longer queues, but the trade-off should be raids filled with more compatible players.

Solo, duo and trio raids now play by different rules

This builds on Update 1.36.0, which began tracking behaviour separately across Solo, Duo and Trio matches. A peaceful solo scavenger can therefore collect plants and complete quests without that behaviour affecting the intense PvP raids they play with friends. Likewise, an aggressive trio should no longer push the same player toward combat-heavy solo sessions. ARC Raiders will keep its trademark unpredictability, but matchmaking should become better at understanding how you approach each format.

Embark is treating these settings as a test rather than a permanent solution. The studio will monitor matchmaking data, review community feedback and adjust the system again if necessary. That feels sensible for an extraction game where every lobby needs the right balance of danger, opportunity and wonderfully chaotic player encounters.

Elsewhere, Update 1.38.0 adds Camo and Black variants for the Torpedo set. Existing owners receive both automatically and do not need to restart the game. The Fourth Expedition also departed on July 21, giving participating veterans a fresh start alongside Mystery Rewards. Fourth-Expedition Raiders could earn temporary Blueprints and up to 750 permanent Raider Tokens through departure damage objectives, while unlocking the first stage of the Zenith outfit and additional stash space.

Whether you prefer friendly scavenging, tense extractions or charging into every firefight like a loot-hungry maniac, smarter matchmaking could make ARC Raiders even more enjoyable. Aggression-based matchmaking has always been one of ARC Raiders' more talked about features. This update tries to address the main complaints by better telling apart players who start fights and those who defend themselves. The devs are still making adjustments instead of leaving the system as it was.
