The developers of Slay the Spire 2 have shared new insights into the game’s future, confirming that additional characters and several new gameplay modes are currently in development. These updates are part of the studio’s broader early access strategy, which focuses on iteration and player feedback.

A game that's still in the making

According to Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano, the team is actively working on introducing at least one new playable character, with the possibility of more. The initial roster was intentionally designed to be approachable, giving players a clear understanding of core mechanics. Future characters, however, are expected to introduce more intricate systems and playstyles, potentially adding greater depth and variety to the game.

Slay the Spire 2 remains a safe bet. The gameplay is as square as ever: efficient deckbuilding, good synergies and runs that require a minimum of thought. You can feel that everything has been well mastered, and the game clearly has something to please fans of the genre. An added bonus is the co-op mode, which I really enjoyed. Playing with other players is a refreshing change of pace, especially when you're just starting to get the hang of the game. It makes the runs more fun and a little less repetitive. Because yes, despite this, I still find it hard to stay in the game for long. The games end up looking the same, and I tire of them pretty quickly.

Anything that includes game modes and multiplayer is great. It gives more variety when it comes to enjoying a game.

The multiplayer is a blast. The only downside I can take away from this is on a visual level, because in order to see my partner's statuses I have to hover my mouse over them. I would love to be able to see his life and statuses under his character, just like I see mine.

In addition to the game modes, there is a good modding community which makes the game a lot of ways to play it, especially if you have friends.

I'm really intrigued by the co-op mode in Slay the Spire 2, the kind of addition that can bring a whole new dimension to the game and renew the experience. That said, I'd prefer to wait for the final version before jumping in, so as to enjoy complete, well-balanced content right from the start. I've only played the first Slay the Spire, but given how well it was done, I'm bound to be curious about this sequel. And from what I've seen, feedback on early access has been very positive, which is reassuring for further development.

I've wiped the slate clean on 1 and can't wait to try out 2! Overall, the 2 is an improvement on the 1, with some good ideas added.
