Save the souls of Earth’s last animals in After Us

Piccolo Studios has announced that its next game, After Us, is coming this May 23, 2023, for the PC and current next-gen consoles. Like their previous game Arise: A Simple Story, After Us tells an emotionally-charged tale about humanity’s effects on the environment. Check out the After Us gameplay trailer here:

Saving souls in the apocalypse

First announced at The Game Awards, After Us is a platformer set after the apocalypse when the world has collapsed from environmental degradation. You play as Gaia, the spirit of the planet, on a quest to find and gather the souls of the very last extinct animals. In emotional and poetic scenes, you find them in a myriad of places: the last dog that died in a junkyard, the last stag that died in a trap, the last eagle that died in its cage, and the last whale that was harpooned and lying at the bottom of the sea. 

The environments presented are dreamlike visions of the post-apocalypse: enormous cities where electricity still somehow flows, ruins covered in grime and rust, and of course, your enemies, the Devourers. These oil-covered creatures will attack you on sight, and while the game sports some form of combat mechanic, Gaia isn't built for fighting so it may be better to stealth around them instead.

Studio co-founder Alexis Corominas said that this game is about legacies:

"Arise was us looking back and that's why we had an old man looking back at memories of his life and all that. We were having a middle age crisis, I had the dream of creating a video game company. Now we're a working company, we have to do a second title, [and] we decided to look ahead. We were older, some of us had sons during the process, and so you start to see the future and… what are we leaving behind us?"
