NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 flagship GPU may be nearing the end of its supply
Nvidia continues to deny that its GeForce RTX 5090 has been discontinued, but new information from its board partners suggests the flagship gaming GPU may be nearing the end of its production life. According to YouTube hardware creator Roman Hartung, better known as der8auer, manufacturers can no longer order the components needed to build new cards, and even the backorders previously used to navigate supply shortages are no longer an option.
In his latest investigation, der8auer shared an account from an anonymous Nvidia add-in-board (AIB) partner, potentially representing a manufacturer such as ASUS, MSI, or Gigabyte. The source said Nvidia has not officially declared the RTX 5090 end-of-life, yet the company is no longer supplying the GB202 GPU or the 32GB of GDDR7 memory required to manufacture additional cards.
A separate statement from an unnamed cooling manufacturer adds to the concerns. The company reportedly said that two of its partners have already cut their orders for RTX 5090 heatsinks, with no orders for the card's cooling solutions scheduled for the second quarter of 2027. While this does not independently confirm a cancellation, it suggests that production plans are being scaled back considerably.
The most revealing detail concerns Nvidia's ordering system. The AIB partner explained that previous shortages and manufacturing delays had not prevented it from placing backorders. Those orders would eventually be fulfilled when supplies improved. With the RTX 5090, however, the manufacturer can no longer submit backorders at all, raising questions about whether additional inventory will ever arrive.

One possible explanation is Nvidia's growing focus on AI hardware. Professional RTX Pro graphics cards can offer higher profit margins than consumer GeForce products, giving Nvidia a financial incentive to prioritize workstation GPUs. If AI demand weakens or market conditions change, the company could potentially redirect production capacity toward gaming graphics cards.
Meanwhile, rumors suggest Nvidia could introduce a GeForce RTX 5080 with 24GB of memory in the first quarter of 2027, possibly as part of a refreshed SUPER lineup. Until Nvidia provides further clarification, the RTX 5090's future remains uncertain, but the latest reports point to increasingly limited availability.
